Buck 122? Info please!

Post by spike55 »

Spike here going thru the horde, I uncovered this one today and having trouble dating it and determining the value to list. Buck 122 dive knife with a leather sheath , I know it is not the correct one, but it is protected. I searched all over the horde for the correct sheath or the dive scabbard, found 2 dive scabbards, but they are not the right ones. I notice my handle has the brads showing holding the knife together, where others do not?? Anyone give me a idea of what year I have, any details you may know and a general value to know how to list this nice piece??

Thanks Spike

Spike,

I am not even a pretend expert in this area, but between this forum and being the moderator at BF in the Buck area I read a lot of posts.

My gut level reply to you is that I think you will find this is not really a dive knife. The general model is a 124. Dive models came with plastic sheaths and had a hole in the rear bolster for a cord. And were made only for a short while. I think most 124 collectors call this one of two versions with serrated blades. Your knife is marked 122 and may be one of those 'let's use up these blades' factory issues. But, like I said there are a couple of guys that know every detail on these big guys maybe we will hear from them.

Hi Spik55,

The First of the slab side 122's started in 1971 it had gray/black micarta, upside down tang stamp, Late in the 71 year Buck discontinued the 122. In 1973 the 122 was again made with gray/black micarta or just black micarta, rightside up tang stamp. Also, the 71 & 73 122 nemo's were shipped with the swinging loop sheath not the plastic sheath that came with the older phenolic 122's. In addition, the 73 122 nemo had stainless guard & butt and the 73 124's used Aluminum guard & butt.

This information is from MR. Joe Houser and can be read by any BCCI member in the December 2006 BCCI news letter. If you are not a member of the BCCI you should join, all of the past news letters are on the club web site and are full of Buck knife history, well worth the price of a membership.
