Hello from Ohio
Hi everyone,
New to the forum and just give a little introduction. I've always been into knives since I was a young boy and now that I'm older I've started to make my own knives in addition to my collecting. I'm mostly doing fixed blades but looking to move towards slip joints and some liner and lockbacks. Right now I do it as a hobby as I don't want my hobby to become a job, otherwise I probably won't enjoy it as much anymore.
Glad to be here and hope I can contribute something to the membership in knowledge and advice.
Cheers,
John

Re: Hello from Ohio
Here are some of what I've made. To be honest I haven't photographed all of them and some are already in others hands. Being new to the craft I've been gifting them away to friends/family. I'm just doing it as a hobby. I really enjoy working with the materials and mostly the design aspect. I've got a pretty low end setup. Craftsman 2x42, Harbor Freight drill press and some hand tools. I'd love to get a KMG grinder and mini mill, but that's not in the budget for now. I've mostly been doing fixed blades, but did make my first friction folder, well, it's a work in progress till I get stuff to the heat treater and back. I'm also really interested in trying some slip joints next, probably followed by liner and lockbacks. Not everything I make is practical, but most are.. sometimes you have to let the wild side out right?

Re: Hello from Ohio
Right now I'm using carbon steel, either 1084 or 1095. Once I get a few good designs and have the courage I'll grab some stainless or semi stainless to give a try. I'm a big fan of the character that carbon takes on with use as well as it's durability and ease of edge maintenance. Plus it's 5 x cheaper if I mess up a blade (lucky doesn't happen that often).Cutty wrote:Hawk

I agree. Carbon steel, especially 1095, is superb for knife bladesHawk45 wrote:Right now I'm using carbon steel, either 1084 or 1095.
