The "Basement" knives.............

In the process of re-photographing my collection(to update it)I remember putting up a small display board in the basement to show off some of the knives I had that were too big to fit into my regular cabinets. Since my son has taken up residence there I haven't had much occasion to go down there so today I had him take off the piecesw on the board and bring them up to be photographed.Here are some of those:

First up is a pair of swords made entirely of water buffalo horn from the Phillipines.I got these at an antique shop owned by a friend of mine back in the 1970's.All she knew about them was that they had come from an old estate sale.They aren't in particularly good shape but I thought they were very unique.Don't recall what I paid for them but it was probably about $10 for the pair.

Second is a huge barong (the biggest one I have ever seen)decorated with pieces of pearl.This has to be a ceremonial piece as it is near impossible to hold in one hand and swing it.

Last is another barong almost as big that has what appears to be a goat horn for a handle decorated with gold filigree.Again probably a ceremonial piece.

I have some more Philippine knives to post also.

EDIT:The knives I referred to as barongs may in fact be golangs;they are very similar in shape except for the handle.

Here are a few more:
A golang with a handle carved in the shape of a dog's head.They must have seen an early KABAR folder and copied it.

Another one with a carved horn handle

Another smaller golang.

My final one:From Aceh(northern Sumatra) a peudeueng panjang which literally translated means "long sword".The blade is 24 in long and ground in a very unusual way:there is a fuller about two thirds the length of the blade and below that the grind is concave and progressing to convex.Think of the cross section as the shape of a wasp's body or a Gerber Mk II.
The guard is forged as one piece with the blade and very intricately carved into an eight sided flower shape with gold inlayed designs all around.The handle seems to be a piece of horn but I have no idea what animal it may have come from.
For it's huge length it is remarkably well balanced and point heavy and would no doubt remove someone's head rather readily.

Almost forgot this little gem;definitely a souvenir piece.Knives average about 4" long and made of aluminum and wood.
