I know exactly what you mean, especially if it is a customer's knife.
I will draw out my patterns, and I try new filework patterns on the edge of a piece of 1/16" 1095 steel flat stock. That way I have a good idea of what to expect and what problems I might encounter when filing the backspring or liner.
You did good though! Better file work than some customs I have seen!
