All About Pocket Knives

I just got my first 2 Great Easterns back from the repairs. I will take pictures tonight, when my camera charges up. Found it right where I left it.
Let me say these 2 knives in no way shape or form reseble the 2 knives I sent out. These are excellent knives. Fit and finish are excellent, blades line up centered, walk and talk, all is there. I can tell they replaced the blades, if you saw the first pictures you'd know they were throw aways, to much work needed to save those. I'm quite impressed, these are knives one would expect to pay more than $75.00 for.
I'm one happy customer, blades are sharp, snap into the half stop position and snap open. These knives are EXACTLY what you would want. Even though I have others, they did make me think wow!

I did notice that the sending adress was from Bill Howard. Anyone else get one from him?

Hey Hukk, so glad the returned knives came back exemplary for you. I am an older Case collecter but I really have been wanting to get into some newer brand American knives. I have been watching the GEC threads on this forum with great interest. As I don't own one yet I certainly can't make my own intelligent decision. We can only hope that this company will get to the point where you don't have to send a knife back to get the quality you pay for in the beginning. To send them back to you totally revamped and in fine condition is at least making an effort towards customer satisfaction. Thanks for the update, Kelley

I plan on calling them tomorrow and to deliver my personal thanks. I do think they are a classy bunch, but hey, they are new, they did not have the large pool of talent that was available to Canal Street. They are the true start up from scatch. All things considered, I think they are a success in spite of the few bad knives that were sent out. It takes a lot of balls to do what they are doing in America in this day and age. I think I'm pickier than most since I do make, repair and modify knives as well as make sheaths. Because I work with knives and I'm hard on myself, it does carry over into collecting and I try to be careful I don't get down on a new company nor to soft because they are new and American. Must keep everything in proper context.
Good luck with yours, I hope they do as well with yours as they did with mine.

btw-what was the turn around time for service ?

I sent the knives out on March 29 and Bill Howard looked at my knives on Saturday March 31. That means they should have been available for rework on April 2, I do not know what day they started. I got them back on the morning of April 30, so turn around was 1 month including shipping. They used UPS or Fed Ex (I forget because I had some knife making supplies on my doorstep that day also). ( You guys that know me, know memory is not my strong point ). It takes 5 days to go across country by either of these shippers. GEC being a true start up more than likely does not yet have a rework procedure in place. Rework is very costly and slows down the manufacturing processes.
1 month is very good for a start up company, I say that because I spent a couple decades doing QC work and understand manufacturing, rework and QC extremely well and I did do this work under one start up company. I also bring it up not to defend GEC, but share with you a small bit of the complexities of what I know in the manufacturing world. The complexities of any start up are ten fold, not everyone is sure of their complete roles yet and they are developing along the way. QC is QC, same techniques and procedures, doesn't matter what industry it's in, just a couple slight modifications and away you go.
Well, enough of my ::blah:: ::blah:: you want to see the pictures.

The only thing I see is that the red jigged bone is different on the front vs. the back. One pin looks a little sunken, it is in a groove. Same for the Horsecut, just not as noticeable.

You can still see some very small cuts from the jigging into the bolster. This is definitely from the buffer. I took my big 1 HP 10 inch 1725 RPM buffer and did a test over the weekend. I bought some wormgroove last week and attached a left over piece on an old bolster and was able to duplicate the same thing.

A buffer at 1725 RPM (Figures from K&G catalog)
6 inch wheel turns at 2750 (Feet of wheel surface passing over work per minute) Not RPM (these are the worn out wheels shown in the picture)
8 inch wheel turns at 3650 (Feet of wheel surface passing over work per minute) Not RPM
10 inch wheel turns at 5475 (Feet of wheel surface passing over work per minute) Not RPM
The 10 inch wheel gave some pretty big cuts even with a loose Muslin wheel.
I called this morning and They were glad to hear some positive feedback from a customer, usually they don't hear back.

I should also mention that I ran my fingers up and down, across the shield and pins and felt no snag. Tried it with a cloth and got the same results.

Yeah, I need to buy a bigger safe. Or 1 for the guns and another for the knives. That way I can pick up a few more rifles.
