pearl boy scout the standard
always a lot of questions on these.
This is the first one i have seen on bay that i think is original, and
maybe a good standard to go by , when looking at others.
Phil should be able to give us more info on this model

Re: pearl boy scout the standard
Cato I had planned to post that knife myself. I'm far from an expert on pearl scout knives since I do not own a single one. With that said, I do have some reservations about that particular knife. For one thing, I don't find a pearl handled Ulster official scout in Official Scout Blades that has the round shield. 600 Scout Knives does not list an Ulster in pearl with a round shield either. Additionally, I've not encountered that particular shield on any scout knife thus far.
To me, the bolsters are more squared off than I'd expect on an Dwight Devine era Ulster scout and the pearl looks like it might have been put on the knife last week. I don't have $800 to invest in a scout knife just now, but if I did, it would not be invested in that one. Can't wait to see what some of the real knife pros have to say about this one.

The listing has a photo looking down into the knife with the blades open. The liner where the shield attaches is pulled away from the pearl. Also it doesn`t have a description other than scout knife, and I didn`t see any pattern number.

Re: pearl boy scout the standard
I have 3 official Scout knives in my collection that have pearl handles but I'm far from an expert on the subject.
The 2 Ulster pearl handled knives that I own both have federal shields and to my knowledge (35 years of collecting Scout knives) Ulster never manufactured a pearl handled knife with a round shield.
I also share prior concerns about the round shield. I don't know of any round shields on official knives that have a red painted background. This leads me to believe that at some point in the knife's life somebody "customized" the shield.
I also have concerns about the tang stamp, bolsters, handles, minimalist description and price. The only thing that I feel comfortable with is the etching!
Needless to say I will NOT be adding this knife to my collection.

Re: pearl boy scout the standard
WOW, somebody actually paid $1,200 with a Buy-It-Now, amazing!
So here's an update to my prior posting now that I have my reference materials in front of me. I'm of the opinion that 3-4 pearl knives were produced from 1926-1947 depending on which source you follow:
1). NY Knife Company (Holbrook N5B and Kerr HMR09BR)
2). Remington (Holbrook R4D and Kerr REM10BR)
3). Ulster (Holbrook U1A and Kerr UDD04) - 1926-1928, 3 rivet, interstate shield
4). Ulster (Kerr UBR02) - 1942-1947, no Dwight Devine on main blade tang, 3 rivet, interstate shield
In no case do either of these trusted sources have a pearl handled Ulster with a round Tenderfoot shield with a red background, 4 rivets oddly spaced, customized backspring and oddly shaped handles and bolsters.
My opinion is that this is somebody's Frankenstein that just sold for a very high price. You have to love this hobby!

WOW! Whomever it was that bought this knife for $1,200 without doing thorough research obviously had $1,200 extra lying around to learn the hard way... I am not feeling sympathetic for some reason. And with such a vague description
EDIT: I just looked at the listing, The seller has a star rating of a whopping 9...

Re: pearl boy scout the standard
My dad taught me that the world was filled with people with more money than brains and here is living proof.
I almost though that maybe this was some sort of Ulster (c1947-1948) or Imperial (1962) transitional knife using leftover parts stock but with no evidence of a pearl handled Ulster with a round Tenderfoot shield with a red background, 4 rivets oddly spaced, customized back-spring and oddly shaped handles and bolsters I'm still of the opinion that this knife was created on someone's workbench and not from craftsmen in Ellenville NY.
AAPK continues to be a key resource for me to validate knives that I contemplating purchasing or selling and this thread is living proof. Thanks Cato!

Other than the exorbitant price the buyer paid for it, I see nothing wrong with that knife.

Re: pearl boy scout the standard
I know this is an old thread .
But needs an update .
I agree with MB the OP knife is 100% correct and original .
The Ulster pearl official scouts came with multiple different round shields in blue and red enamel and with the std ulster federal shield .
My belief is these were mostly presentation pieces .
Here are a few I have been lucky enough to have found over the last 30 plus years .

Re: pearl boy scout the standard
thanks for sharing Mike. Your presentation knife speculation is very possible but it’s odd that they haven’t been referenced in any books that I’m aware of. The only visible difference that I can see is the painted round shield versions have round lift studs for the can opener and the Federal shield versions have flat lift tabs. Hey Tom ,
The enamel round blue shield versions are the later models 1930s with the 3 piece can openers / with the round lift tab .
The federal shield versions are all early one price can openers most likely made in the mid to late 1920s .
All have flat bolsters and fancy worked liners .
I say presentation pieces because several of these have inscriptions etched in the pearl on the back scale .
As far as literature goes , and why I posted this , it needs updated lol .

I was going to comment that the buyer either had deep pockets and not a care in the world, or they knew something we didn't.
Sounds like it may have been the later. Still $12bills, I don't know man !
And way to bring it home Scoutman Mike.
