Pair of Trail Blazers
Stopped in at a local gun show and found these two. A pair of trail blazers still in the original box with all the paper work. One has pattern number on the front and the other on the back. I'm trying to figure out which box and which paperwork goes to which knife. The only difference I can see between the boxes is that one of them has a gold foil sticker indicating the model number. Didn't know if that would indicate that one of the boxes was older than the other. The difference between the paper work is that one is a heavier yellow paper while the other is a very light almost tissue paper. There was even an original invoice included. Retailed for $24 in 1973. Guessing that invoice goes with the knife with the pattern number on the front. Any ideas about matching the right knife to the original box and paperwork?

Nice Pair! (always wanted to say that without getting slapped).
The newer of your two knives has the model number - 317 - on the front of the tang, the first issue of the 317 has the model number on the back of the tang - both knives were made under contract by Camillus. Attached is a picture of a NOS 317 I bought about a year ago - the box bottom had the date 1979 penciled on it. My box has the gold sticker on the end label too (I'm thinking the sticker was used whenever Buck had run out of 317 marked boxes to package the knife in, and used a 110 box in its place). From what I have learned you cannot put too much faith in precise dating based on the paper items packaged with Buck knives - apparently they used whatever they had on hand to package with, and if they found an old case of instructions, etc., in they went. Very nice find! OH

Take a look at the very bottom of the inserts for a date. That will tell which inserts likely go with which knife. Boxes look like they are made the same the Made In USA knife should have two piece box with model name and number printed on the end of the box without anything else. That box should also have a slick surface with a unique texture. I will see if I can find one an make a picture.
