SCHMIDT'S HOLMAC BRAND

Post by DR_MAGOO »

Can anyone provide information on this knife? How old is this knife?
The late Jim Parker told me, in May of 2000, that he believed it to be pre- 1900 because there is no U.S.A. or Germany on the tang. Jim thought that it was probably German made.

It is a whittler pattern with pearl handles.

Schmidt's Holmac Brand are the only tang markings.

HI!

There is no doubt in my mind that it is German made. I has all the classic tall tell signs of that. As for the date, remember that if it was indeed made in Germany for a German market then it wouldn't have to have the German stamp. This lesson is confusing for some. Look at Goins or Levines book and it explains the dating of Country on a knife. This relates to exporting of knives and tariffs in the USA. You can't assume anything with knives.

I would say from the looks of it though, it would be early 1900's but that is only my guess and not based on any other facts. Have you done a google search on the Company? Thanks for great pics
