Question on coon stripe

Post by singin46 »

Is coon stripe a type of celluloid? I've got a Bulldog congress coon. Will it be subject to shringage or gassing? Or is this material something else all together different. Sorry if its a dumb question.

Check this site out,it may answer some of your questions. ::tu::http://www.vintageknives.com/tek9.asp?id=29&pg=blank

PS:the Bulldog coon stripe is made from celluloid, its my understanding that the newer knives are not made of the same gassing out celluloid of the past.

I own several Bulldog Coonstripe knives, the oldest being a 1983 Congress cut plug and 1983 1st generation Stockman Lumberjack. The handle became more popular in the 3rd Generation. (1993) and several patterns including the sowbellies had coonstripe handles. I can't speak for what it is made of but can assure you that it is probably the most stable celluloid or nonnatural handle variation that bulldog made. I have had absolutely no trouble with shrinkage or gassing of the coonstripes. ::tu::
As a side note I will mention the Bulldog handle colors that in my experience do have problems with gassing.
1. Tobacco Brown, hard to find one that has not destroyed the knife. ::doh::
2.Tortoise, again hard to find one that has not destroyed the knife. ::doh::
3. Red Sparkle, requires constant maintenance to keep from discoloring the shields and bolsters. ::tear::
4. Abalone celluloid, mostly shrinkage ::tear::
5. End of Day, mostly shrinkage. ::tear::
6. Duckfeather, mostly shrinkage ::tear::
This may be more info than you asked for and is just mine and someother collector's experience. Hope it helps. :)

Hey Tom,I have seen some with shrinkage problems but none with gassing.Have you seen any of the Bulldogs with this particular problem of gassing?

sorry Tom,I should have read your post more carefully,...when you say destroy,I assume that means gassing,Correct?

In my experience the gassing is what destroys the knife. The tobacco brown, tortoise, and Red sparkle are the ones I have had problems with gassing, the others with shrinkage. also the cracked ice celluloid shrinks pretty bad.
A lot of collectors haven't even seen any of the tobacco brown bulldog knives because almost all are destroyed or have had the handles replaced.

I've had a Red Sparkle BKC 403 Canoe, 1 of 177, that outgassed so badly that I had to have it customized. I have other Red Sparkle knives that are just fine. This one was my first to outgas that bad.

I think if others read that post and if this info was added it would help many.

There is a lot of REAL good INFO for all to read in it.
Some day some one will edit that info in to a book or paper I hope.
That is why I like to keep facts on Cell all to gether.
Your post is worth adding.

olderdogs1; In General Knife Discussion on page two.

Fast way it to click on search at the top and just type in Celluloidd Handle.

First copy this then go to it and post.

Singin46,
Your knife is coonstripe. You will fine a lot of variations in the color depending on the run. With practice it is fairly easy to tell the difference between 1st generation coonstripe and the other generations. It helps if you are a bulldog nut like myself though.
