Identifying 1095 from (lack of) tang stamp?

Is it safe to assume that a Camillus knife is 1095 if it lacks the "stainless" tang stamp?

I'm primarily interested in Camillus Scout, Camper and Cub Scout type knives, but am also interested in some of the lock back knives.

I'm mostly interested in 1095 blades though and some of the examples I see that lack the "stainless" stamp sure look awfully shiny - too shiny.

stick a magnet on it Dave.
Sometime a magnet will also be attracted to stainless steel, but not as strong as good ol' carbon steel like 1095.

Look for dark speckleing and or spider webbing on the blades, especially on the tang.

No, I do not think so.
The Stainless was actually a series of knives they put out.

While in general I think the majority of the knives Camillus made were 1095, unless marked 'stainless', I would not count on that especially in the later production knives, but that is just s guesstimation based on knives and have and what I have seen researching Camillus.

You might go to Larry's website and look at the catalogs. Some of them will tell you what the steel is.
