Trying to get supplies local

Post by Chief RID »

I went to all the stores today looking for pin stock and a pin holder and drill presses and drill press vice. Not very encouraged. I checked Jantz on line last night. It will be hard to order when you are as green as me. What are the other sites I need to look at for supplies and special tools for pocket knife restoration?

These are the companies I use most of the time, listed roughly in the order of frequency that I use them.

For bone handles I use Culpepper-

Jantz Supply

I met some of the ladies from Jantz this year at the OKCA show in Oregon. The folks at Jantz are very helpful and they have more items in stock than any other supplier. They stock more sizes and types of pin stock than the other companies.

USA Knife Makers Supply aka: Midwest Knife Makers supply

This site is ran by Tracy Mickley who is a knife maker himself and a really nice guy to deal with.

Providian Forge-

I know Gene and his wife Sally. She makes some great mosaic pin patterns I can’t find anywhere else. They are really nice folks I got to know because our tables are only a row apart at the OKCA show.

Knife & Gun Supply
http://www.knifeandgun.com/
The folks are really nice and used to show at the OKCA show. They also do custom stabilizing of handle material.

This is Otto Frei a jeweler’s supply house. I get good Swiss files and some abrasives from them.

I pick up some brass & ss pin stock from my local Ace Hardware or True Value stores.
I also find some in hobby supply stores.
I have found knife making supplies are where you find them! They are everywhere, you just have to see the potential in the things around you.

These are suppliers I buy from occasion but not on a regular basis.

Knife Kits.com

Texas Knife Makers Supply
http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/index.php

Hawkins Knife Making Supplies
http://hawkinsknifemakingsupplies.com/

I have not used these suppliers:

Sheffield Supply
http://www.sheffieldsupply.com/

Masecraft Supply
http://www.masecraftsupply.com/

Pop’s Knife Supply
http://popsknifesupplies.com/

Alpha Knife Supply
http://www.alphaknifesupply.com/

I hope these help.
If anyone has other sites where they get supplies. please share them with the rest of us!

You can find some pin stock at Hobby Lobby and also ACE Hardware. In this area Harbor Feight is a good place for cheap tools - they have drill presses & vices for them.

Grizzly.com is also an excellent source for quality machinery at very decent prices.

Very true Rob.
I would be lost without my Grizzly 2X72" belt sander!
My neighbor has several of their machines. We are both impressed with their quality. ::tu::
