Question regarding GI Pocket Knife Pins

Post by novice »

Are the pins on these stainless? If yes, does the stainless need to be annealed before spinning?

Those are more like formed heads and not spun heads.
You can only spin heads on brass and nickel silver, stainless is too hard even annealed.
Those are manufactured rivets and the head is formed by machinery, not by spinning as we have dis cussed it in previous threads.

Based on what Dale said, I'd use nickel-silver pins to put one of those back together.

I appreciate the answers, clearly I did not search deeply enough. I do some metalworking and guess I already knew what the answer was but then doubted it.

"Perhaps pointing the ends of the SS pin after annealing makes all the difference when spinning?",

I got one of the carbide spinners from Camillus. One of their workers told me that anything beside brass & nickel silver (aka -white brass) were too hard to spin and stainless would wear out the spinners.

The quote was the dialogue I had going in my head before I posted the question here.
