Brand new to site

Hello

I just joined the site, and actually just started collecting knives. So, first.. Hello to everyone
Secondly, I just purchased a whalebone knife. Its a Case 1977 W165ssp SAB. I verified it with Case via phone. My question is.. is there any special care that should be taken with the whalebone?
Does anyone have this model of knife and have any care suggestions?

Hello and welcome, I have never owned a whalebone so I can't be of much help,but I would assume it would be like any other bone...I sure would like to see a pic of the whole knife.

Case would probably be the best people to ask, but I'm sure something that could keep the bone from completely drying out is the best course of action. Wax?

This will not answer your question at all,
But it looks just like the Case XX Moby Dick Knives that were scrimshawed, and sold in the nice display cases (still been trying to pick one up to add to my collection)

The listing I found this on, said that it was the same knife but was whalebone rather than scrimshawed Bone. The knife you described is sometimes called Nantucket Sleigh Ride as well. It has etched bolsters and is a great looking knife. There is one on Ebay now with a nice wooden case. Hope you find the one that fits your needs soon.

Try Mineral oil once a year, i use it on my stag and bone handled knives. It keeps them from drying out and adds a "shine" when they are on display. Nothing worse the an exceptional knife like yours with shrunken handles 20 years from now.
