Another good idea
Another good idea
Here is another good tool idea that I got from my new friend in KY. Just take a pc of scrap lumber and fashion it into a paddle shape. Get industrial strength magnets and hollow out an opening in the center of your paddle. Epoxy the magnets in the paddle so they are flush with the top. In my pictures I used wood filler to go around the opening to fill in the gap. I don't have a router and hollowed this out with a drill bit. Now you have a tool you can use to put a backspring on and take it to the disc grinder and remove thickness from it. If you try to take .010 holding the spring with vice grips you have the same luck as I have. This will allow you a good chance of getting it right or very close. You can also put a blade on this and take it to the buffer and again not hold it with vice grips or your hands. The knob on the back is from an old drawer and lets you position the paddle with both hands to keep it straight. I saw him super glue bone handles to his paddle and take them to the disc grinder and get one side smooth. He popped it loose with a screw driver when he was done. You can fashion one of these to suit your own purposes in a few minutes and no doubt this will have many other uses. Notice the hole in the handle so this can be placed on the tool board and never lost or misplaced - right.

Re: Another good idea
That's a great finger saver, Bob! You could take that thing
straight from the grinder to the water bucket also.
I've been using a blue Sharpie pen as layout solution.
It would work great in conjunction with the "paddle," as to watch for taper.
Probably need pretty strong magnets, don't ya?
Rare earth magnets should work nicely!
Keep this stuff coming, Bob! It's nice to see these tools.

Doggone it Bob, I am spending more time making tools than fixing knives!
Great stuff, keep 'em comin'!
