73 Scout...?

Post by WelderBob »

This one has me stumped...it's a single blade Tidoute with no etch or pattern number and year of manufacture. I'm going to call the scales white bone...I don't think they are primitive bone as that was for Northfield's. I didn't think single blade 73's were made untill 2008...could be wrong on that. Can't find a listing or picture that would shed some light on it...no tube with the knife and no history from the previous owner. If you guy's have an idea on this I would be very appreciative...it's about to drive me nut's..... ::cb::

Could be Beaver Pond Bone?? Current listings have etch and spey, but it might be possible that some were clip and etch is gone?
Or - since there is no number - maybe a 2blade that had the stamps/etch on the removed blade................but the bone looks very
close to Beaver Pond or Beaver Tail.

IM it could be beaver pond...didn't think about that. I don't believe the knife has been taken apart and the finish is dead on for a Tidioute...I've had blade's removed and etch's removed but this one looks factory...but I could be wrong.

I am only throwing out a guess, it reminded me of Beaver Pond as soon as I saw it......................but I am new to GEC.
Hopefully Monk or Gunstock will be here with the real answer. Cool knife and be nice to find out.

Hey Bob_________I'm betting it's Primitive Bone ::hmm:: ______I have this 2006,#73 Scout, that is not on the GEC production records,___it has 1-36,scribed on the spey blade___but it does have 2006,on the tang___don't know why yours does not, have a year ??? But, I beleive, that maybe, someone had the spey blade ""removed"" as you did,on some of your knives ??? this was before GEC,had single blades___the first single blade knives, were in 2007,and all were model #23's_single blade genuine UN-X-LD , Stag & Red Stag---single blade Buffalo Horn---and the two Bronco'Charlies___they also did a lot of Tidioute,""Factort Test Runs" and Northfield,""Factory Exclusives""___back then also___that one could have slipped through the ""record books"" ????________but I'm thinking, with no year on the tang,( which would have been on the spey blade)and no factory tube*** that it was one that some one,had the spey blade removed to make a single bladed knife________just my thoughts ::uc:: ____the bone looks very similar to this one ,I have, don't ya' think ????____Is that the knife I saw, on the bay,???? no one would bid, because of the mystery????______later,Monk ::tu::

PS____mine is a Northfield, but they did a lot of ""EXPERIMENTING"" back then?????

Hey Monk, I just don't know about the bone...if this one been apart it was done by a real pro. I've heard that GEC didn't waste part's at the end of each run so it could be a made up knife....maybe a "lunch box" special. The shape of the handles is a bit odd...a flat spot on each side...something I've never seen on any other GEC knife.

It was the bay knife...and only one fool bid on it...

It is interesting ::hmm:: ____that flat spot on the sides, was something, that I noticed,on the 2006 knives, more than any others___the #73 Bark Moss Green Bone, knife, that I had,was really the most noticeable____maybe, one of the early (first year) knifemakers,??? that was his way of making the knives, before they "standardized" the process ???? ::shrug:: _____just like the ""Brands Shield""____ in 2007 most of the ""Acrylics"" were Northfield__then they changed them to ,Tidioute ::shrug:: the early Red Stags, were without shields, and called ""Genuine Stag"___then went to Northfield, with a shield ::shrug:: ______it must be fun,to own the company, and just have someone make you a knife each day,a little different, than the one, made yesterday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!_________Keep on makin' em' GEC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ::ds::

I'm just guessing, Bob, but I think it's a 2007 Beaver Pond Bone that's had the spey removed along with the etch. That would explain the lack of a date. The factory finish can be duplicated on the blade by a skilled cutler; looks to be very well done!

I would say it is almost certainly had a secondary blade removed. The factory wouldn't put out a knife like that. Whoever did it, did a good job of re-spinning the backspring pin and end nail.

The factory does allow employees to by seconds, and I would say that one of these might have made it onto the street; but it would have a rather noticeable defect somewhere.

hey big monk, I believe that 1/36 you have was a "transition knife" , 2006 blades, but 2007 production. At least thats how I recorded them when I rec'd my 2.The bigger run of 73 primitives that came out after those , had 2007 blades.

That is what,I was thinkin' too,Chris _____I beleive,it was the first time, they used the ""Primitive Bone"" as a handle material ?? Don't know why,it was not listed as a ""factory test run"" or "factory exclusive" like some of the others ???? ::shrug::

The only knives I recall them calling transition were some 23's that they marked both 2006 & 2007 on the blade (River Valley and Primitive I think). After that, if they had some previous year blades they just assembled the knife and put it on the previous years count. That is one of the reasons they don't have a final count until the middle of the year.
