Who do you collect?
Currently, I do not collect customized factory manufactured knives, but I have seen several that are very nice. I'm sure I will start in eventually. I assume there are some artists who are better at it than others. Just wondering if knives are worth more if customized by specific individuals?? Who is known for doing good work? Does anyone here do any customs?
Too many questions?

The most well known customizer of factory knives is David YellowHorse , But his son Brian(I think its his son) Is doing some nice work in david,s style with his own touch.Theres also Santa Fe Stoneworks(More of a Company than an Individual in my opinion)
There are others that are known, but I like the knives that the owners customize themselves.
The styles and the ideas are always fresh and interesting.
We all dont have the resources to buy a David Yellowhorse custom knife but finding a customized factory knife by an unknown(original owner) artist that appells to us and is well thought out and exacuted in fit and finnish is still a treasure of a find at minimum cost over standard issued factory knive's.
We have to remember, David Yellowhorse was not always well known and his work so valuable. You may be the next Yellowhorse or the owner of one of the first customized factory knive's of the Next David Yellowhorse.

Cutomizers
A few oldtimers (pun intended
) were:
Ray Cook....Did mostly Case knives. Added blades, better scales, nice filework.
Herman Williams....Did mostly Schrade. Beautiful filework, engine turning, nice scales.
Wendell Carson....Scales, added blades. Part-time maker.
Just to add to the mix.

Where were you able to find information about them?
I know Cook and Carson because I own a couple pieces that came from Houston Price. A '78 Case made into a 5 blade pattern by Cook. And a Sargent (Colonel Coon?) made into a 5 blade by Carson. And I know of Williams 'cause I hang some at the Schrade Forum. But finding much about them is difficult online or in print. At least it has been for me.

Paul,
Voyles site is also where I saw some examples.....I do know Cook passed away some years ago, he was also on the NKCA Board of Directors.
All three of them (Carson, Cook, and Williams) do/did quite nice customization work, in my opinion. I would like to find/collect some more.
I don't see much of it on Traditional patterns today.....other than Brian and David Yellowhorse, as you mentioned. I think they both still live here in Arizona.
Oh, I thought of another customizer. His knives are done under the name "Ghostown"....and are usually Buck 110s, converted to autos.....with handle work "Similar" to the Yellowhorse knives. He uses old silver coins and stones of all types. Don't know his name...
.....fairly expensive ($700-1000) but nice work, as well.

Thanks for the Info Bill;
The customized knives are of interest to me but as you say to buy one is well beyond my reach. So I have deciced to try (as cash permits) to get set up to customize my own.More fun and I can get exactly what I want.
I have made a few knives in past years but due to getting disabled and haveing to move to an appartment,I sold ALL my tools and equipment
(What a stupid thing to do)
I'm OK with it though, now I can venture into a new part of the hobby and make something already good looking even better(I hope)the word I'm searching for is EMBELLISHMENT.

Embellishment...
Bryan, hope this is not bad form to post this link....sorry if you object....but I thought you guys might not be familiar with this particular site, and it would be of interest....especially since Paul seems to have the urge...
http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=46
There is also a "Wall Of Fame" for embellishment....you can get to it from the Forums page.
Just as information.

DOH!!!!!
Upon revisiting the above site, I noticed that Paul not only visited the site....but has been posting! I'm sorry for not paying more attention, Paul. I guess you already knew about it.
At least I see you got some good advice from a master.
Bryan, it IS hard to close that site sometimes.

I collect a variety of knives. I collect green Case knives, I also collect custom knives; such as Rick Hinderer and DMKnives. I also LOVE Chris Reeve knives. I have 2 Darrel Ralph knives on order as well. I am also a HUGE Spyderco fan!! I have an ecclectic collection. What can I say, I AM a knife knut!! I soooo want a custom slip joint from Don Morrow.
