blade length

does anybody know what the blade length limit in georgia is for carrying a knife? i mean is it ok to carry your average pocketknife like a canoe or trapper or whatever. i want to be able to carry a pocket knife but i wont until i find out if youre allowed to or not.

there is a wealth of info on the web. i did one search and came up with no lockback knives with blades over 3 1/2". normal knives are not subject unless you carry somewhere weapons are prohibited. any advice you get here is presumptive and may not apply to your situation.
as i said before, you need to read more about all knife subjects before you decide which path you take grasshopper.

Zeke- Make sure you look into local city ordinances. Here in Ohio there is no state specified size limit regarding knives; however certain cities in my area limit blade length to 2.5" or less. In general I would say its safe to carry an average pocket knife so long as you carry it discretely & stay out of trouble- but sometimes its better to be safe then sorry.

I'm an attorney in Ohio, and I can tell you that in general, all the above answers are correct, (possibly not necessarily for Ohio, but correct, in general in most cases). Unfortunately, knife laws vary not only from state to state, but from county to county, and even from one municipality to another. It's very difficult for anyone to give you a definitive answer to your question under all circumstances. And to further complicate the issue, enforcement varies greatly depending on the totality of the circumstances involved as well as the type of knife. There are laws that govern the posession, use and sale of switchblade, automatic, or gravity knives. There are innumerable laws concerning the actual definition of the term "concealed carry". Some regions attempt to ban the carry of any knife that is being carried for either "offensive" or "defensive" purposes. (I guess specific enforcement of that one would hinge on why you told the police officer you were carrying the knife!)

Anyway, in general, carrying what we generally refer to as an average pocket knife should cause you no problem, including slipjoints, small lockbacks or liner locks, etc. 2.5" or 3" bladelength seems to be the number that comes up most often when legal blade length compliance is mentioned in a region's codified ordinances. Having something larger, (a 5" folding hunter under the front seat of your car, for ex.), may raise
quite a few questions if you're stopped and it's seen. It's most probably be a CCW violation.

Use common sense, and if all else leaves you uncertain, you can always check in with your local authorities for a more definitive answer and/or
interpretation of your local ordinances.

Not to wander off topic.....ha, ha, ha.

In a speaking class, I was once challanged to recite a couple of verses of "Jabberwocky" to a group of my peers...it wasn't a pretty sight.

Bernard Levine's site (where I purloined the link above) has all the State laws...but off course not county, etc...and is a bit out of date. But still a good resource and interesting.
