After reading Orvets story, thought I would share this knife as well. This was made for my Grandfather prior to him being shipped off to Europe during WW II.
The knife was given to me by my Grandfather back before I was 13 yrs old, as I was still living in Iowa at the time.
I know the knife was made from a file, and the sheath was handmade as well. On one side of the handle, inside the knife is my Grandfathers 1st 2 Initials and his Army Serial #.
The other side that you can see in the picture, has the makers name and info. Very difficult to read the name, and there is a spot over part of the town name where it was made.
So guessing part of the name apears to read MAIISON, thought the 2nd I could be an E... maybe.
The the town name, 1st word is blurred, 2nd word is RIVER, MINN.
So I know it was made in Minnesota.
After scanning city names in the Atlas in Minnesota, possible matches:
Deep River
Elk River
Pine River
And looking at the locations on the map... not sure which town it would be, as none are close to the border of Iowa.
One mistake the maker did do though was on the Sheath and in the knife he put my grandfathers initials, except he was wrong on the middle initial, he used my Greatgrandfathers middleinitial of A, when my grandfathers middle name started with a T, for Theodore.
This old knife still holds a very sharp edge, and I have never sharpened it since it has been in my possession. Great piece of old craftsmanship, which has been in my Family since the 1940's.
