another old Remington

Post by Mossdancer »

Hi;
Its a 3713 four blade. Dont know what a 71 pattern but it looks to be a serpentine cattleman. It has a strange main blade, at first I thought it was a worn down clip but with closer look it may be a wharncliff or sheepsfoot.
Notice the outline of the profile in pics. The primary end tang stamps are circle umc without made in usa the secondary are with made in usa. So very possibly made in 24-25 time space. The bone stag is weird, it jigged in front and plain old shin bone on back. You can see the nick out of the back handle, shows it to be bone. I tried to get a pic. of inside of liner. There is a cutout on one side. Its like a halfmoon. I cant find one of these to compare too. Any ideas as to authenticity,age,worth etc. Walks and talks like new. Big beefy backsprings.

The 3713 is reffered to as a premium stock. It has a clip and punch blade on one end and a cut off pen and spet blade on the other end. Slant bolsters are are nice touch. The back handle has been replaced. Look closely at the pin heads. Other than that I see no other tampering with the knife. You are probably right on the time frame. In mint condition the knife lists for $500 and would probably bring more than that. Yours, with a replaced back handle, cracked front handle, pitted tangs, is probably a $65 knife, give or take. Having 4 blades is always a plus as they are a little more scarce than their 3 blade counterparts.

Hi RC;
Thanks for the info. Now that I know what to look for I see the flatter heads on the rivets, The end ones actually appear to be of copper or bronze from the color. The front handle; if your talking about lower end, close up it looks to be jigged like that. Other than not being quite as smooth as outer bark it really gives a nice effect. Comparing the clip with the rem a couple of posts back the wear pattern is so much the same its scary. Its as though someone tried to make them into a modified sheepsfoot.
Again, thanks for the help I appreciate it.
