Re: whittiling knife
Tripp,
I have a couple that I keep in my whittlin' tool box...the red bone medium congress has CV blades, I like em', sharpens up just like 1095. The other is an orange bone large congress with SS blades. Oddly enough, the SS blades on this congress seem OK with edge retention, maybe due to the thickness of the blade? I normally don't care for SS blades to carve with, but this one has been OK.
If you are looking to buy a newer Case congress to whittle with, I would recommend the red bone medium CV (Chrome Vanadium) blade model. Sharpens up great and holds an edge well. You can always find some oldies but goodies, but may have to pay a premium, depending on condition.
Also, you may want to consider the size of the knife, as whittling for more than an hour or so with too small a knife can fatigue your hand.
Good Luck and happy whittlin'
Case also makes a Humpback Whittler in red bone with CV blades that's worth looking into.
