Need info on older Bowie Hunter
Hi:
Need approx. 1/2 or 1/4 century? Is it a valid knife? Given a willing seller and buyer market.
What would sell for? What would pay for it? Thanks for the help.

Looks to be about 11 or so inches with a 6.5" or thereabouts blade.
I've seen similar on the bay selling from 75 to 500. Around two hundred to three hundred seems to be the norm.
I'm thinkin early 20th Century

The only pertinent measurement I can see missing is blade thickness is approx 11/32nds inch.
For those that do not know you can click on most of the photos and they will enlarge.
Wullie, I do not disagree with early 20th although the country mark was 1891 and after. The three rivet handle attachment with stag make me think possibly 1890's to early 19teens.
Anyone agree or disagree. I have a Ward B4any with similar handle bindings and it has been dated between 1891 and 1910. It is pictured elsewhere on this forum from several years back if you want to search for it.
The long clip is a mystery. The markings in last photo are just a mess. The Eng should be with a period and not a full colon. I guess the stamps could have been worn. Any idea when the Washington Works marks went away? By the way a gent on British Blades says the Eng, would be valid.
Thanks,
moss

Halfway between 1891 - 1910 would be early 20th century , however , Levine's Guide shows IXL Washington Works 1848-c1870's .

I have verified LG4. I also know that Bernard would say with the country marked it would be after 1890. Other documentation say only the Wash Wks was after 1848, as though it never stopped. I did see some WWII knives that were marked with Washington Works. Who knows some things are just hard to find out about. Thank You for your help. Any other offerings will be appreciated.

I am looking for the exact length of the blade and the exact overall length.Mossdancer wrote:MB:

Very hard to determine with the ruler as it is shown in your pictures.
It makes a big difference in price if it is a 6" or a 7" blade, also I can give you the factory number they used for the knife in their catalog.
The fact that the blade has England stamped on it does not mean it has to be made after 1891, as Wostenholm was one of the few companies in England that marked their knives with England before the McKinley tariff act became law in 1890.

I'm a dumb ass,
I TOTALLY missed the Washington Works stamp. I vaguely recall that Stamp being discontinued somewhere around 1870-1880 ish. I have no documentation to back that up and may be totally confusing it with something else in my feeble mind.

My apologies.
The blade from tip to guard is 6 13/16". The guard is 1/8".The handle from blade side of guard is 4 9/16". The overall length is 11 3/8". The choil is approx 3/32" with the kick included. The tang is 1 centimeter from the guard to start of saber grind. Along the spine it is seven cm's to start of swedge or false edge with an additional three cm's to start of clip point. The saber grind is approx 5/8" with a very slight hollow grind. It is approx 15/32" from top of saber grind to spine. As a buyer I would grade it as very good at 85 to 90% finish and blade, the handle shows no perceptible damage. From my point of view the neat factor is medium.

Re: Need info on older Bowie Hunter
Moss,
According to my catalog the knife is a model #16595.
It originally had a 7" blade or there abouts, nothing was exact.
As far as dating it, from the style it looks to be from after 1900.
You cannot date these things from tang stamps, I have one that was made in the 1970`s.
It is the same style knife but with a 6" blade, It is stamped "Washington Works" just like this knife.
The old stamps were used over again and new ones were made in the 70`s to satisfy collectors.
It is still a nice knife and if you can get it for a decent price it would be a nice addition to your collection.
As far as value, it`s worth whatever you or someone else is willing to pay for it, Willie is about right with the price estimates.
