I had never heard of music wire before, but it's supposed to be hardened/tempered spring steel used for making springs in pianos.
Could this be used for Lockback spring material?

hmmm, interesting.
They have it at the local Ace hardware up to 1/8 diameter, It only costs a couple of bucks, will have to check it out.
It says it's spring steel, so I think it might work.

The answer is yes, you can use 3/32 music wire for older LB7s and 7/64s for the newer LB7s that have the round straight spring. For the newer LB7s you need the music wire that is between 1/8 and 3/32 and is something like .112 diam which is slightly smaller than 1/8 (.125)

apparently is just small dia music wire. The 3/32 music wire will work just fine for lockback spring material.muskrat man wrote:piano wire and fiddle strings are totally different
I bought 5 72 inch pieces just a tad bigger than 7/64 for 9 bucks from amazon
