Is this Case for real

Post by CarlM »

Read the knife!

The stamps can say what ever they want, I just glanced through and spotted my 1st alert!

The seller can say what ever they want about the E-Bay picture service, Look at the "Sons" stamp" which tells me this is not a Case knife.

Quickly looking through my reference guide, Case made 2 Leg Knife's a B1097 & RM 1097, which should have the Stamping Tested instead of the one it is showing. One is listed as having Christmas Tree Handle, and the other as being Yellow Composition.

Flipping into the older section of my references for Older Case knives, which that stamping would fall under: There is a GS 1097 but no GS197. Which a real GS 1097 would be worth nearly $800.

The Solingen Germay stamp... I am no Case expert, and I am not sure that Case had their old knives made out of German Steel... or assembled there.

But as for me, there would be no way I would touch this knife. Now here is a funny occourance, it just so happens the winning bidder, I seen that name on something I was looking at that was questionable, and had on my watch lists, I have since deleted it, and was trying to locate it, but it seemed like the add was listed just about the same, there is something that rings a bell with me on these names, just can't put my finger on it at the moment. The wording of the add though I know I have seen it before.

There is another Case ladies leg knife on eBay that also has a Solingen Germay blade and appears identical to this one. I cannot see the tang stamp on this, the other, I agree the tang stamp looked odd. It is a fairly old stamp if memory serves me right. Here is the one that is on eBay with Pearl handles. ::paranoid::

I notive that both knives have 2 pins and bolsters. Fightn' Rooster and Bulldog ladies leg knives made in Solingen have 3 pins and no bolsters on the knives, at least on the latest ones. So, these knives do not look like Bulldog, Fightn' Rooster, or Remington. The boot bolster looks different on a Remington. Looked like rust on the pins, celluloid breaking down?

I thought the pins were just a real dark brass, but yes ay be rust. Judging the pictures of the Leg Knifes in my guides, they are longer looking and more slender. Blade shaped differently, but those would be the Tested stamped ones. That stamping would be older than the tested stamp, tonight when I get home I will have to check my other reference books.

Compared to you guys, I know nothing about knives but when I saw this one, red flags poped up every where. If I hang out here long enough maybe I will learn something. I hate to see someone pay that much for a fake knife.

Made in the Olbertz factory in Solingen in 1990 when Jim Parker owned Case...there were maybe 5 or 6 patterns made in various handles.

One of my customers has one of these. I thought it was a fake and told him so. He said he purchased it from a local hardware store near Charlotte, NC, around '91. Could his be fake?
