If you have Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery (C.A.C.) look on page 171. The stamp you have is on that page, 1920-1940.
Says this stamp is frequently found on pattern 6229 1/2 Tadpole Pattern.

I almost called fake, looking through a few other references, but came across it in the C.A.C.
Thanks for making me do some reading tonight, as I was not familiar with that stamping, if you could post a pic of the whole knife.

Is there any way we can get some more pics of the stamp and all of the knife? I think the stamp is not quite right.

Hi;
This is the closest that Swaynes has. Does not show era. However the rarity is quite high.

Hi ikeybmg,
The information that SFC ADP gave you is accurate. Even though this stamp does not specify tested it is indeed a tested era stamp(C-1920-1939) that is usually found on the 29!/2 pattern little tadpole, which is exactly what your knife is. The knife is not stainless, and the reason you are not seeing a pattern # is because only a very few early tested era knives had them, most tested era knives did not have pattern numbers. Both the stamp and knife appear authentic as far as I can tell from the pictures. I see nothing out of the ordinary.

the knife and stamp looks ok to me. ive got a book that has the different stamps that case has used over the years and states the periods they were used. i got it out and thought i would take a picture of the page that shows all of the stamps and a close up of the one in question. the period was between 1920-40 that it was used. anyway, hope this helps.

ikeybmg,

I think you would advised to look the stamp over very close before you buy it, the check on the C, and the radius of the top of the C isnt right for a 1920-1940. Also the polish on the blades are a sharp contrast to the build up of grime on the handles, they just dont go together. Just my two cents.

Nothing wrong with that knife...it is IMHO 100% genuine and correct, and a nice example of a tadpole. You will see that odd stamping on a few other small patterns. You will also see these same patterns with the normal stamp.

knife related q & a

Hi guys,
I too agree with 4ever3 on the fact that the check doesn't look right for the 1920-1940 era tang stamps. I seem to detect the "S" also is different. In Steve's post pics of the 1920-1940 tang stamps, the S is slightly back toward the "C" . On the knife in question, I think the S is leaning a little forward. JMO. Maybe the angle of the pic. What bothers me about this knife is the shield. It looks off-center to me. The shiels does seem to be pined but here's the kicker to me... Look at the "E" on CASE...Why would the "E" be so much smaller than the rest of the letters? If it is an e...or is it a pin??? :?

Thanks Knifeaholic for the reply,

I guess this cold I've been trying to shake for the past few days is taking it's toll. ::nod:: On my second bottle of Nyquil this week :mrgreen: Any Idea on the value of a tadpole like that? I'll keep my eyes open for one....as soon as I get well :oops:

i dont blame anyone for being cautious and not wanting to get stuck with a fake knife, but in my opinion, everything looks authentic. it looks like its in pretty good condition too and if it were me, i wouldnt be afraid to buy the knife at all.

The great thing about the tadpole is that unlike many smaller knives it moves very well. probably because it is a discontinued pattern. I own two very old little tadpoles one Case Bradford(C-1915-1919) and one early 1920's. These little knives were discontinued sometime in the 1960's.
