Replacing ebony handles

Does anyone have any idea how difficult it is to replace an ebony handle on a knife?

How well would a replacement match the original?

How much would such a replacement cost?

Any recommendations on a person to do the replacement?

What size are you talking about?

As far as a match goes, I have some very good very black ebony now, (ask Johnnie) that is probably as or better than what was on it originally if the knife was from 1900-1940.
It would be hard to match the wear & fading of time.

Show us what you are talking about.

BTW, ebony is not expensive.

Sorry for getting back so late.

I don't have a picture of the knife, it was one I was thinking about bidding on and I didn't win the bid. Mostly I was just looking for general information on what it would cost to replace an ebony handle on a say, 3 5/8" knife and how close the repair would match the original. The reason is, I sometimes see knives that I would like to bid on but can't make an intelligent decision because I don't know what it would cost to restore them (generally replacing wooden handles).

Well, in my shop anything up to a big cokebottle can be done for $25 including return shipping, the new handle will usually look 90% original or better depending on the particular knife and how many battle scars the original handle has. Of course these battle scars can be imitated on the new handle to help further match the knife's appearance, or the battle scars can be removed from the old handle for that matter depending on the damae.
