I picked this up (on private property) near the Savannah River, the material is fine grained, dense/ heavy (~2 1/2-3 lbs), kind of blueish/gray steel color that appears? to be polished from use...
I tend to think it is made of a type of pottery/earthenware because I"ve also found large, thick pottery shards made of the exact same material at the same site. the way its ground on the sides make me think it might've been hafted??.. idunno?
Hi:
Interesting artifact.
Think there is any possibility the top as shown in photo 1 was a type of saddle for the hand to grasp(the right hand as shown). With the bottom being semi in the rocker form to be used as a grinder or pestle for some form of wheat, oats, corn etc. The end used as a pounder to break up larger pieces before the grinding began. Then again who knows it might just be for throwing. Interesting though.

I don't know a lot about Indian artifacts, but I have a friend who does. He has an extensive collection that would be valued well into the six figure range. He has been involved in the collection, authintication, and sale of artifacts for 40+ years. He has also had several articles published on the topic as well as having made contributions to more than one book on the subject of Native American Artifacts.
I sent him the photos you posted of the stone you found. He looked them over carefully and sent word back to me that it is his considered opinion that what you have found is known in artifact collecting circles as an "Indian Sex Stone". He did not elaborate further.
Hope this helps.

could have been waste or a failed pot that got fired. you did say it's the same material as pottery shards found near by? it looks more abstract than designed to me.

out of about half of a minnow bucket full of shards, there were only a couple that were the same type of material... one looks like it could be a rim piece of a vessel...the other just a typically shaped shard... all the other shards I've found there have a courser or "sandy" texture and are mostly earth-tone? in color (brown/tan/black/reddish/orange)... only these two have the same (fine grained) texture and bluish/steel gray color... ...
