Lamson and Goodnow

Any Historian or otherwise knowledgeable persons please feel free to answer. I am posting a photo of a stamp on an old Lamson. It has been postulated by an acquaintance that the number under the map may represent the date 7-11-1866. I have my doubts, I think its probably a catalog number. I think maybe a portion of the answer may lie in the made in U.S. stamp on top. When was the Acronym U.S. replaced with U.S.A. or are they maybe interchangeable? Or just possibly one of you may have an old Lamson Catalog which shows this trademark stamp. Any help will be most appreciated.

can you show the rest of the knife? that could help date it as well. the made in u.s. stamp probably means post 1891. highly unlikly they would stamp the month, day and year of manufacture.

L & G was a supplier during the Civil War, and military goods were marked U.S. minus the 'A'

I agree about the stamp. While marking with the year might be possible I doubt the day, or even the month would be likely.

Goins shows that particular stamp as after 1871, but that was based on the best information he had at the time he wrote that.

no, after 1891. while goins shows that stamp, it does not show "made in u.s. by" possibly used after the tariff act.

This is pure speculation on my part but I believe this knife to be of fairly late manufacture for a couple of reasons.

For one thing the map used in the logo would seem to indicate all of the lower 48 states.Not sure when the exact date of the 48th state was but I believe it was sometime in the 1920's.

The second thing is the blade is not a hand forging(no taper to the rear of the blade)but a blanked blade stamped from a sheet of steel.Just an opinion.

I agree that it may be from the 20th century. Just from the feel and the rivets. I thought of both of your conclusions and found the following, the stamping from Mr Levine. The map elsewhere.
