Re: Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things
We’ve had about an inch of rain in the past week but it came in two different doses a few days apart, about a half inch each time. Water in the creeks is running, the stock ponds are full. It’s just getting dry enough to get equipment into the fields, so all in all, not bad. Everything seems behind by a month or so, with redbuds that typically bloom in late February blooming now. Trees are just starting to put out new leaves. Strange though, the elms are usually the first trees to put on new leaves, and pecans are last, but they’re both budding out at the same time this year.peanut740 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 10:33 pmLooks like it's been dry.Mumbleypeg wrote: ↑Tue Mar 30, 2021 2:52 am Pictures from earlier today. Kentucky, the state I’m from has the largest beef herd east of the Mississippi. So we have a lot of pasture and a lot of cattle. We don’t have the wide open spaces cattlemen out west do, but thanks to our soil and rainfall we have much higher stocking rates per acre than other places.
But traditionally our money maker was tobacco. And tobacco does best in a hot, slightly dry summer. There’s an old saying amongst tobacco farmers.
“A dry year will scare you to death and a wet year will starve you to death.”
But I haven’t heard that in a long time.

Re: Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things
We used to have a big tobacco industry but that has been closed down now. The state where i live has had a really good year for rainfall, one of the best for a long time. So the crop growers are in a good position at the moment with a lot of deep soil moisture and are about to start planting for this years crop after having a bumper season last year. But New South Wales and parts of southern Queensland were devastated by floods just over a week ago, some places getting over 40 inches of rain in a few days. I just feel so sorry for them, a lot of them were just coming out of a long drought only to have crops, stock, fences and infrastructure destroyed by floods, i wonder how much more they can take. Hope all is well with you over there.Colonel26 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 31, 2021 4:49 amThat’s a good saying. I’ll have to use that. What’s the rain fall like in your part of Australia?
