Re: Cattle Knives, 45 pattern!
Greg, thanks for the gracious comments.
I have been fortunate enough to find another Case 45 Cattle knife to add to my collection. Here are pictures of a WR Case & Sons 06245 in with red Winterbottom bone handles. The Winterbottom on the 06245 is not quite as red as the Winterbottom on the 6345 that was posted earlier.
Thanks for looking.

Jerry, that Winterbottom bone is outstanding. Just don't see many of those Case winterbottoms, and in that condition especially. Looks like you've added another fine specimen to your "cattle herd".

You are fotunate indeed Jerry. That is a beautiful knife. Maybe not quite as red but a rich stately hue. Gorgeous!

This is like a reference book on -45 patterns, loving it and learning a lot.

Thanks all for the nice comments! Its been fun and educational for me to deep dive into this pattern.
Being a transplanted Texan, the cattle knife collection is my way of trying to address the "all hat and no cattle" comments I hear when I am walking around my local small town in my boots and hat.

Re: Cattle Knives, 45 pattern!
I have managed to add more examples to my Case 45 collection. The knife below was obtained from Steve Knifeaholic in his AAPK store.
Pictures are of a Case XX 2345 1/2 with a factory original bail. If not for the bail this would be a reasonably common knife to find. The factory bail makes it a rare example. There is no pattern number stamped on this knife which I believe indicates it was made in the early 1940's at the beginning of the Case XX era.
Thanks for looking.

I'm going to see if I can find an app that will detect a new post to this thread from Jerry H. , Tom or Roger and automatically post "Nice one guys" from me.

Re: Cattle Knives, 45 pattern!
All, thank you for the gracious comments.
Here are pictures of 2 green bone Case XX 06245 DG (dog grooming) patterns. One of them is stamped Case XX the other one has no stamping whatsoever, but I believe it is a Case knife. The unstamped knife has blade etching that says "Stevens Dog Stripper". The Case stamped example has a main Spear blade and secondary grooming/stripping blade. On the Stevens example, both blades are grooming / stripping blades. It is interesting that both examples have blank shields. I have seen blank shields on Case Tested and earlier knives, but these knives are the first that I can recall a blank shield on a Case XX. Please share insights related to blank shields on XX knives.
The teeth on the grooming blades seem pretty fragile, so I'm guessing these knives are unused because the teeth are straight and all there (unlike mine
).

Nice grooming knives Jerry.
I had heard in some cases on contract knives, The Shield was installed backwards. Another words the case name and lettering is facing towards the scale

Hey Ralph - according to Steve Pfeiffer it is a Case. Looks like the one I have. Nice looking 45DG's. Here is mine: http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... g+stripperRalphAlsip wrote:All, thank you for the gracious comments.

Rex, thanks for pointing me to your knife. The 2 Stevens Dog Strippers look like brothers. Glad to get confirmation it was made by Case and see the other comments about shields and the Stevens company.

Re: Cattle Knives, 45 pattern!
Keith and Ken, thank you for the encouragement. Ken, I had been looking for a DG example for a few years with no luck. Then I found the knife with the Stevens etch and in a matter of a few days the Case stamped one kinda found me. It's great when good luck happens.
An old farmer in Illinois many years ago asked me if I knew the definition of the word "serendipity". I said no I didn't. He told me that serendipity is when you are looking for a needle in the haystack and you find the farmer's daughter.
The reason for that little tangent is because I now have a 2nd etched blade 45 pattern (the Stevens dog groomer is the first). Here is a Case Bradford 6345 1/2 P etched from a company in Ottumwa, IA. The handles are Rogers bone which is another first in my 45 collection. The oval shield has raised letters and all the blades are stamped including the pattern number 6345 1/2 P on the punch.
Coincidentally, the punch on this has a needle tip
