"Something old, something new" is what a would-be bride does on her wedding day. She holds or carries or stashes away s/o from her life, as well as s/n from her life.
Exactly what this represents I don't know, but a wild guess is, she's leaving s/o which is her life up until that day, and joining s/n which is her marriage from that day forward.
I can taste the BS in the back of my throat now, but that's how I understand it, if I'm incorrect perhaps one of our happily married, unhappily married, divorced, or widowed members would post the correct meaning of that ritual.
