Knife7Knut, I love using my dad's, grandfather's, and g-grandfather's tools. It's very special to have family treasures like that.

Latest shop project. I want to build a hand plane till to store my hand planes, but needed a place on the wall. I had a empty spot with the with insulation showing, and decided to add a piece of plywood to mount the plane. Then I decided to add some old fence pickets as trim above the pegboard to make everything look a little better. Now all I have to do is make a till to hold all the planes.

Nice lineup, Mike. I love using those curved draw knives.

Is the far right plane a 22” jointer? I have a Union that belong to my great uncle, not in as good shape as yours but has his initials stamped on the heel. Priceless connection to a time gone by, just like k7k’s hammer.

Thanks Parker. Yes, that's an old Stanley No. 7 jointer plane. This one has a plastic / bakelite adjustment knob, no brass, and painted handles, which makes it a War time type 17, circa 1942-45. I bought it along with a No. 5 at an Estate sale last July for $20 each. They were dirty and had surface rust, but otherwise in decent shape. I sharpened the blade and used it to restore / flatten my big workbench top last year. Took three days of hand planeing! After that I did a proper clean-up on it.

Great to see an old tool like that, even better when it’s put to work. Very nice.

Cleaning up some old tools. Before and after...and then a dunk in the oil to keep the rust away (for a little while at least... ::facepalm:: )... Of interest to me is the Collins pick head, it is the only one I have found in years of hunting for Collins tools/machetes/axes... ::hmm::

Very nice work, Topdog. What did you use to clean it up? It looks like you heated it up over the barrel before dunking it in the oil?

My sister went to some garage sales today, and sent me some pics of some old tools - which she wound up buying for me. One is a Stanley 10 1/4 rabbet plane for $20 (these are very pricey). And a Stanley 700 vise for $10. I will post some pics when I get them.

Great work, Mike and GSPTOPDOG! ::tu:: I've never seen a Collins pick head, either...but I found a huge Collins Legitimus machete (about two feet long) some years ago. Sadly, I wasn't able to purchase it.

Years ago I caught the “old tool disease” and built a till for just a few of the hand plane that I use on a regular basis. Most of us have limited space so plan well and narrow the field down to only the plane that are used on a regular basis and you will be better off in the long run . I will add pix of the handplane and handsaw till that I use. Hopefully it will add to the ideas you have in mind.

Beautiful shop, Louisville Boy! Very, very nice. You gave me a good idea - putting the support legs under the front and making a whole shelf unit under the till. I was a little worried about the board I mounted on the wall supporting all that weight if I just hung it up there. I feel like I have looked at about 1000 tills on the internet, but I think your design will work perfect for me.

I like all the vintage signs you have on the walls and shelfs, too. I have been trying to collect a few of those as well.

Cudgee, the kids got that for me for Father's day a couple of years ago. Sure do like it.

I picked up my latest Estate sale tools that my sister bought for me the other day. The somewhat rare Stanley No. 10 1/4 carriage maker's plane. It is a rabbet plane, and is one of only two planes Stanley made with the tilting handles (the other is a No. 85 scraper plane - I picked up one of those last year). I paid $10 for this one, and they usually go for over $600 on ebay. They were made from 1911 to 1941. I think mine dates to between 1935-1941 based on the logo. She also picke me up a little block plane - I think it is a Crusader? Don't know anything about it. And she bought me this cool little Stanley 700 corner vise for $10. I think I will get lots of use out of this. They made these from around 1930 to 1967. I think mine dates to the 1960s.

LB, I admire your saw rack - looks like you have it narrowed down to the 42 most frequently used saws. Very nice.

Mike, those little L vises are pretty versatile for holding weirdly shaped things in many positions. I have a few aluminum Champion brand ones, sometimes I clamp one to a plank on two sawhorses out on the job.

Parker, I sharpen saws for several tradesmen and hobbiest..that is the reason for the large saw till. This seems to be a lost skill for many. I originally took this on to help people out, but it has turned into something that I am getting out of due to so many tradesman/hobbiest dropping off saws and never picking them up. I have 20+ that belong to tradesmen that have been here for over one year. If you look close at the picture you will see "hang tags" that I used to help me keep track of the name of the owner of each saw. The smaller saw till is the one with my frequently used saws and a couple for my nephew that needed a touchup. You are right about having a large saw till...if all those were 'my frequently used saws' I could only say if that were the case, I would not be one that should be giving advice.

You did quite well with that Stanley Carriage Makers Plane ( No. 10 1/4). A fairly rare bird indeed. Most of the ones I have seen have actually seen very little use and can be cleaned up easily. Yours looks to be in great shape. If it were me, I would clean it up and put it aside due to value.
