I'm not Wayne but Snakedoctor is what we called 'em when I was a kid. It's a Dragonfly.

From Wikipedia:
The green darner or common green darner (Anax junius), after its resemblance to a darning-needle, is a species of dragonfly in the family Aeshnidae. One of the most common and abundant species throughout North America, it also ranges south to Panama. It is well known for its great migration distance from the northern United States south into Texas and Mexico. It also occurs in the Caribbean, Tahiti, and Asia from Japan to mainland China. It is the official insect for the state of Washington in the United States.

The green darner is one of the largest extant dragonflies: males grow to 76 mm (3.0 in) in length with a wingspan of up to 80 mm (3.1 in).

As kids we referred to them are darning needles. I'm pretty sure most youngsters don't know what a real darning needle is let alone it's use in this case. I understand that they are hell on mosquitoes and when seen dipping across water they are often actually feeding on them.

Can any of you birders help me identify this first time visitor that just showed up. The only thing I've come up with is possibly a Harris Sparrow, but those normally remain west of the Mississippi. Birds due stray however. Any suggestions? [Note the black face mask and black bib ending in a black dot.] It is probably something more common but I am drawing a blank from my books.

Q.S.That's the closest I can get, my book does say"these large handsome sparrows are favorites at eastern feeders since they rarely stray so far from their Midwestern range. They vigorously scratch in the leaves and soil for food". I don't know if this helps or not, but we get some interlopers from time to time that are not normally found here, the Rufus hummingbird being one.

Thanks bighomer. So I think I'm going to go with the Harris, which is interesting and is a first for me. Can't find anything else that comes close. Curiously, I've had no common House Finches yet. Last winter they were abundant for several months.

Garry I've got all the House Finches here.

I'm seeing doves, cardinals, blue jays, a Rufus sided towhee or two, a few finches, titmice and several juncos.Starlings are plentiful but not as many as in years past. We see a few eastern bluebird and a few mockingbirds now and then. We use to have robins winter here but not for the last few years. Crackles and cowbirds are few and far between, usually this time of when it as cold as it's been I'm filling feeders once a day, so far this year once a week.

Phil, I'll see your 20 House Finches and raise you a Red-Bellied Woodpecker and a Carolina Wren. Both of these were present last winter and have shown up again. Same ones? Who knows? We do leave one dead tree standing for woodpeckers and it does seem to draw them. AAlthough the Blue Jays brush aside other birds they always yield to the RB Woodpecker, obviously intimidated by that lance like bill.

Re' the dragonflies, I recall an article in a Gun Digest back in the 60's, written by a bird hunter.

In the Spring and Summer, he went down to a lakeside and using a .22 pump rifle and rat shot, would shoot dragonflies on the wing.

He thought it made him a better upland game bird shooter.

I've never done either, but I suspect shooting dragonflies with .22 shot is more difficult than shooting birds.

Kind of like catching flies with chop sticks. Maybe, if you can shoot dragonflies, you can shoot anything.

I'm not even sure anybody still makes rat shot. I do remember seeing some when I was a boy that was made just like paper shot shells.
