If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

I made over 8 lbs of beef jerky over the weekend... used sirloin tip and round steak. Cured and seasoned it and let it marinate for 24 hrs. Took about 5 hrs in the dehydrator at 165ºF to finish. Photo is a small part of it cooling down, after being pulled out.

I occasionally find stuff on my place, often after a good rain. Found another interesting object in my pasture today, which has no obvious reason for being where it was. I know what it is, just not why I found it where I did. ::shrug::

Anyone know what this is? Guesses welcome.

How about a stud that is used to attach a joint brace to a railroad tie.

Larry and Greg, both good guesses, but wrong.

Well, I see a flat just below the little nut that is used to screw the stud into wood by means of a adjustable wrench and the nut is for some sort of adjustment in a infrared high line compensator.

Another good guess Joe, but incorrect. Remember there's no reason I can think of that this would be in a pasture.

The conical end on the fine thread has me perplexed.
Is it some sort of threading tool that once had a woOden handle?

Duh! It's the portastan off of a frambilator. It's used for maintaining tension on the comstat digitizer.

I had a similar situation when the parfar wire disconnected from the Bovey relay switch. What a mess.

Close enough Greg. It's a stairway rail bolt, used to join two pieces of wooden stair rail tightly together, or connect the rail and the newel post. The fluted nut would be accessed via a round hole on the underside of the rail so the joined pieces can be tightened.

This one is an old-timer. Modern versions are designed a little differently, with a hex nut (at least those that my Internet search found are made that way). http://www.rockler.com/rail-bolt-fasten ... gQod7OcEmQ

Ken thanks for that very entertaining little quiz. I'm still a little puzzled by what appears to be a slack adjuster on the fine thread end. That may actually be a specialized stud for connecting a wrought iron baluster to a wooden stairway or base.
