I can just picture Jerryd wearing a safari pith helmet holding his dragonfly net crouched behind the bushes with his nikon at the ready position.

Gosh. Gee. I always wanted to be a dragonfly hunter. Oh wait! I can't do that. I'd have to buy a Nikon cause Greg said I needed one. So much for that harebrained scheme.

I have a pith helmet, for the bee veil, but no Nikon. So I guess I can't be a dragon fly watcher.gsmith7158 wrote:I can just picture Jerryd wearing a safari pith helmet holding his dragonfly net crouched behind the bushes with his nikon at the ready position.

Good news Jerryd and Wade. You won't need a camera just a calculator to count the number of migrating dragonflys.Colonel26 wrote:I have a pith helmet, for the bee veil, but no Nikon. We were cleaning out my father-in-law's garage Sunday, and came across this. Wasn't quite sure what it was at the time, but a little internet detective work shows it to be a universal spanner wrench. I think they are used in fire-fighting. Not sure why he had it, he was a machinist.
Neat tool to find, regardless.

It is a firemans tool. The long slot is to turn off the gas valve. Handy for many home or shop uses.

Correct. The other end is to tighten/loosen 2 1/2 inch couplings on fire hose. It's called a spanner wrench.mrwatch wrote:It is a firemans tool. The long slot is to turn off the gas valve. Handy for many home or shop uses.

I happened to have the camera handy today when the deer wandered through the yard. These are regulars and part of 4 or 5 families that roam nearby. This is green grass by Texas standards in August
due to recent rains. Texas Hill Country deer are small compared to what I grew up with in Southern Illinois. The size difference is even more noticeable with the bucks and their racks.

Re: Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things
Jerry, there were NO deer in S. Illinois when I was growing up. My granddad (born in 1893) told me, in about the early '70s, that he had never seen a deer in the area where he lived (White County / Gallatin County). Now it's an infestation. May have been different over in your area.

Re: Pictures of Miscellaneous Stuff & Things
Jerry, we had deer in Johnson County and Pope County in the 1960's and 1970's. It was unusual to see very many at once back then. Like you said, infestation is the norm today. When you get a little further south and west than your homestead, the terrain changes to more pasture, hills, trees, creeks, swamp, etc. We were taught in school that the glaciation stopped somewhere around Highway 13 which runs east/west from the Ohio River at Shawneetown (east) to the Mississippi River near Murphysboro. So north of highway 13 is flat and became crop land (and coal mines) while south of highway 13 is hardwood forest.
Here is a link to a hunting lodge in Johnson County that shows some pictures of white tail from the area. The way the deer are "hunted" at this lodge is slanted very much in favor of the so called hunter.

You got part of it Jerry. That's Gallatin County. White County is the next county north. Granddad lived in the south west corner of White County.

Boys, I just opened the link to samsonswhitetailmountain.com
I could buy a good used 4X4 truck and a new rifle for what they want for one of the "little" deer! Big antlers are great, but not that great. Glad that some folks can justify spending that kind of money for antlers and I'm glad that the folks runnin' the operation are doing well!

The wife of my old buddy from high school gave this to me yesterday. Yum, yum! It's really good. I think it's more high quality Sorghum than anything to do with being aged in used Bourbon barrels.

Greg, I don't make my own biscuits since I discovered Pillsbury Frozen Biscuits. Now I'm going to have to hit the grocery store.
Awesome Dave. I wish I had the butt and the bike for a trip like that. I have a friend/old neighbor/old Marine who did a 5000 mile (two up) Western swing before his wife died. To me he's a fur piece, iron butt, hero. Do you think you could do it again?

I still have the same bike, it's as good as new, with a majpr upgraded new motor 2 years ago.

I know I'll probably be put in a post hole and stoned for asking this but wouldn't a windshield be a big asset on a trip like that?
