Always remember:

Your daughter is your daughter for the rest of your life,
Your son is your son 'til he takes him a wife.

Don't cash out your retirement accounts.

Just kidding. Looks like a fine young man. ::tu::

About to get a jolt of "life", however, apparently.

If trout weighed 20 pounds you'd never be able to land one. They put up an amazing fight for their size. Way to go Blue !

Here's an Amish phone booth. Seriously. 8) The Amish folk who live in my area are not permitted to have a phone inside their homes. Some need a phone for their businesses so they have one in a phone booth out away from the house. Some even go so far as to train their dog to bark when the phone rings.

I have seen this old photo several times in my life. It popped up in one of those "Amazing Photos" links that appear at the bottom of our computer screens while browsing.

Fish was caught at Catalina Island, California, on September 3rd, 1903.

I haven't researched it to see if this record still stands....

I find it interesting that the fisherman was credited with landing the fish alone.

I wonder if such fish still swim our oceans.

Current all tackle record is 563 lbs, 8 oz caught off California coast in 1968.

A significantly larger fish.

By the 1970s they were just about fished out. They have been protected since 1982.

I read the Wiki article. Apparently, the fish swim in relatively shallow water for their size and spear fishing by scuba divers was pretty much wiping them out.

Now illegal to spear. I don't know what the rules are re' regular all tackle fishing. Probably a catch and release or limits on size.

Interestingly, when you read their feeding habits, etc, they behave just like large mouth or spotted bass, feeding on points and sand bars, eating crustaceans, croaker and other bait fish.

I recall an article in a sporting magazine years ago, alledging that a similar fish grabbed a diver, taking the upper half of his body into its mouth with its teeth around the waist and holding onto him for several moments before releasing him.

Terrifying, if a true story.

The fisherman had some challenges going in to the fight with that small reel. No free spool, and no star drag. you have to assume there is a leather thumb pad on the reel or he used gloves.
It was a 41 minute fight.
I briefly tried to research the reel, but I have no idea who made it.
Good old stuff.

My first thought when I saw that photo was that it was photoshopped. Just does not look like it can be real. Wow - what a fish! Landing it, or boating it, must have been quite a challenge. If I get one like that I will need a bigger dip net.

I submit for you perusal, and for no particular reason ;

A symbol of Southern hospitality and charm, the Magnolia blossom . .. .

From a fairly young tree on the property. Not many blossoms on it (< than 20 I think)
but very much abuzz with insect activity.

And as anyone who has to cut grass around a Magnolia can attest, the 'balls' they drop
are a real sumbitch on lawn equipment !!

And a lone Day Lilly bloom ...

I love Magnolia trees and their blossoms and the way they smell, but they make a goshawful mess on the ground beneath them.

Their leaves are tough, the cones plentiful, and the tree takes up so much ground water, you cannot get grass to grow well beneath them.

They're evergreens, so they stay fully leafed all year.

Beautiful trees.

I planted a little dogwood two years ago. It was a stick I bought at ALDI's for less than ten dollars.

It isn't the usual dogwood, it is a Coosada dogwood.

It blooms later than regular dogwoods and also produces a great quantity of seed pods or cones that litter the ground in mid-Summer.

I took this photo while it was in bloom a week or so back.

Notice the petals are not notched like the regular trees.

Love the magnolia trees but unfortunately they don't grow so well here in south Florida .
Here is a picture of my Jamaican kaper in full bloom . This was about one week ago .
Added a picture of my Jack fruit tree , looks small in the picture but their the size of coconuts .
