... Its a nice knife and agree with you on the polishing but at least they didn't polish the blades - unfortunately folks think shiny sells and because of that it won't change much - it actually makes me bypass those knives - I like the sellers who don't know how to clean knives and leave "as found" or are knife collectors who know the implications of aggressive cleaning - I'm talking about aggressive cleaning like the dreaded buffing wheel which removes metal and rounds edges
... As you already said leave it out and handle it everyday - its a good excuse to play with it for awhile
Thanks! Right! I have already dulled it up using a few tricks. It’s a learning, need to tell sellers to leave things be - before shipping out my purchase. I too will not buy things that are cracked or polished! It’s still a very scarce knife. O well!
Cheers

Re: Ring opener knives
So, like I was complaining about. I purchased this on eBay from pictures of what looked like an 'as is' knife. meaning it did not appear to be shiny or polished up. Once in hand to my annoyance, it was lightly buffed/polished. %$*!@@#!!!! I though to myself. I have included pics of it the way it arrive 'polished', as well pics after I worked on it with applying a re-patina and highlighting it back as I dulled it with super fine steel wool. I think it's about as good as it will get. The brass handles are very similar to Simonds Worden ring turns and their patina....
Cheers! No polishing world!

By the way, seller refunded me 50 bucks on the knife... Though not much, it helps ease the pain. Well not really!

Re: Ring opener knives
Ok, one last round of patina and highlighting. Since I do not have an actual one of these with original patina to look at... This will have to do. I used a q-tip with cold patina carefully applying over and over, to build it up. I then let it dry and rubbed it back with super fine wool. In person it's not quite as dark looking as this photo.

Re: Ring opener knives
I like these, I have two like this one and the other two they made. I even have one that they made just like it without any ring turns at all. Very cool old one! (Hey, I just noticed I am still missing one version! According to the article pics you posted I still need the 'A A Simonds & Son Co.' one.)kennedy knives wrote:Here's one I have

So, the cold patina is starting to richen up and getting a more copper look to it.
So much better than the polished look it had.

Hey guys! This Humphreys Radiant 'Stainless Steel' stamped blade, just in! Pretty mint, never sharpened or used with 'VB' stamped handle scale... I assume meaning 'Very Best'. I have always liked the 'Radiant lamp' stamp on the smaller blades. Now I need another new one....

Re: Ring opener knives
Hey guys! Just landed another very old and cool ring turn knife! It is in the mail...
I have seen other variations of this Shoe Companies ring turn knives, usually having only one larger blade with a ring. This one has a ring only on the main blade to open.. Plus a smaller blade, both with nail nicks..
I will post my own photos once it arrives... I really love them when they are old like this...
Hope everyone is happy and healthy
