New knife collection help

Post by Danv508 »

Hello all I’m new to this forum. I just purchase a nice collection that my boss found in the eaves of his house the original owner of the house was a very well-known doctor. Ian had money to spare. I paid $1000 for the collection and just wondering how well I did not that I’m looking to sell. You are a few knives that I can’t seem to find online and can’t really get much information on them. Please take a look and tell me what you think thanks. All appear to be in new condition their in oil on all the blades so it’s kind a hard to take a good picture

That Joe Kious knife is a keeper as well as the stag Hen & Rooster knife. Unsure on many of the others. Maybe some are custom, and others are modified with file work? A knife like the Mohawk canoe you picture just sold on Ebay for $59.

They are some like the Mohawk canoe knife that I see online for about $150 but mine has different stamping on the other blade that has inox stainless rostfrei that I can’t find on any other knife online. But there’s a lot of others that I can’t find the exact match too.

You may not be able to find an exact match to every knife. The values usually, but not always, tend to be about the same for the same or similar knives from the same maker, or even for similar knives from other makers similarly situated. For example small pearl two blade pen knives made in Solingen will often be about the same value. Sometimes that’s about the best comparison values that can be found and the best you can do. There will be exceptions if the pattern or maker is one of higher demand (supply and demand applies to knives just like it does elsewhere). Keep in mind foremost is condition. A knife in mint condition will be worth more than the same or similar knife if used or damaged. Even if you find comparable knives you may need to adjust for condition accordingly.

Keep watching and you may find a better, closer comparison (or the exact same knife) sold at a later date. Of course more commonly seen knives will be easier to find comparable sales.

Thanks for the info I tried writing them all down and getting the closest comparison values that I could and by my calculation they were probably close to $3000 as a lot. I’m just hoping I made a good decision.

I thought this matched your knife?

That’s the one that I saw but mine has different writing on the other side of the blade. It’s weird things like that that throw off the pricing that I can’t find. And all the blades appear to be in new condition and even the pearl I can’t find any defects anywhere on most of the knives some of the older ones may have just a tiniest bit of wear on the nickel but that’s about it

For 1000, I think you did very well on your purchase. You have some Al Mars that are worth 200 to 300 dollars. Looks like you have the more expensive ones with the engraved bolsters. The Guttmann is a nice one. The Mohawk Canoe from A.G. Russell is worth more than 59 dollars. I’ve sold a few of those for closer to 125 to 145. Just because someone was foolish enough to let one go for that little doesn’t mean it’s only worth that much.
I doubt that you would get 3000 for those but it’s a nice collection to start with.

The Kious folder is a beauty. That one's probably worth at least half of what you paid for the entire lot. ::tu::

Thanks for your input I mostly stick to collecting newer knives like benchmade so this was a definite change for me. They were found in the walls of a house that my boss owns they were doing some renovation work and found a bunch of different things clearly this guy had taste when he was collecting these I just wish we came across the boxes. All the knives appear to be in unused condition.
