Signs of Spring amid the Cycle of Life

It was just a few days agi that my area was covered in ice, sunshine and 60 to 70 degrees has changed that. Yesterday, I saw 2 bird related signs of Spring. No, not Robins, they are in Illinois year round. #1, I saw a Hawk pluck a snake from the road ditch and fly away. #2, The Phoebes are back, I saw some feeding on insects. Spring would be a great time to be a Flycatcher, hordes of insects to feed on, and oh yeah, it is mating season. At the other end of the spectrum, a snake emerging from the ground for the first time since last October being immediately snatched by a Hawk......not so much.

Saw my resident Eastern Blue Bird the other day and was he singing! Mockingbirds are starting to get very vocal as well.

All up and down our two lane road the trees are being cut down. I do not at all care for the landscape all this chopping is doing and think that it will clearly affect bird populations in the area.

Phoebes are a winter bird here along the Gulf Coast. Not real common, but not rare either. This one was in my garden last week.

I have not really seen any spring migrants at this point. Very soon in March they will start passing through.
I have been seeing a couple of Red Tailed Hawks over the neighborhood. Very cool to see.

Excellent shots, Mel, thanks. Red Tails are abundant here and very visible in Winter. The Marsh Hawks (Harriers) that Winter here are my favorite and I can never get a good photo. I love to watch them hunting a field.

I just can't get over the fact that your Pileated Woodpeckers are so common. For me it remains spectacularly rare. I've only ever seen one.
