camillus #72

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Jim, if it's a 1047 it won't have a pattern stamp on the blade. If it's a 72, it will be stamped 72.
No 72 stamp, so it's a 1047 then. Thanks Jerry.

JP, those three are for sure. I have a McGrew that is also black bone. I had posted before that I thought it was and after investigation it is indeed.

Yesterday, this pocket knife arrived and joined my CAMILLUS collection. It's a CAMILLUS 72, 1st generation, 3 blade, swelled center, 3 5/8" closed, 2 tang stamps (a short line maker stamp & a pattern # stamp), long matchstrike/blade pull, "whittler" pocket knife. It received a VERY minor cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

This first generation 72 came in today. Both handles are cracked. The blades are good and all three have decent snap.

I fished it out of the Bay for less than 20 bucks! It’s going to be my next project. I have a set of vintage jigged dark brown bone that I’m thinking about using. I also have some manzanita that I might use. I have some ebony left over from JP’s knife as well.

Good question Jerry. My first thought was to rehandle it when I placed my bid. I considered stabilizing the cracks while waiting for it to be delivered. But once I had it in hand I could see verdigris under the bone so they have to come off.

I hope I can still get some original bones on this old boy. I was going through my old knife parts and thought I hit the jackpot. Found a pair of 72 bone covers. Turns out that they are both pile side covers.

Morning Randy . If you strike out with the guys here let me know. Am heading to our Badger knife show this weekend in Janesville . There are a few guys there that might have some old bone . There’s also a vendor that has some newer bone that looks pretty darn close to old Rogers bone and it’s jigging . Will be getting more of that to have on hand , can send you a couple pieces if interested .
Take care out there .

Morning JP! Thanks for your kind offer. I’m very interested in some bone . Even if I don’t strike out in the swap forum I’d still like to have some of that bone you’re talking about. I have a knife or two that are in need of bone covers. Thanks again and have fun at the knife show. We don’t have knife shows around here! Take care!
