I dont get the shield style? but the weed & Co. is a legit knife brand from yeRS AGO. tHEY WERE MAKERS FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS IN nEW yORK, OR SO iVE READ. tHE WEED & cO NAME IS SUPPOSED TO BE USED UNTIL THE CRAFTSMEN REACH THEIR TOP GAME AND WHEN THE WORKMANSHIP IS "THERE" THE NAME WILL BE CHANGED TO SCHATT & mORGAN. (my caps button is/was stuck). At least they are keeping the brand made in USA. I will give them the benefit of the doubt. The web is full of BS and rumors. Some prove true, most do not.

Well mate, they do have a ways to go yet... My buddy & me's order was a bust, too many finishing issues on both hunters.

It really is a bummer, becuase with a little more work, they could've been an excellent first run. Oh well, they are learning, just takes a good bit of time, to learn the craft from the ground up. Cross fingers next drop will be fixed.

Any pictures of what you received? What were the issues? Just curious.

Did Case not sell in Canada before? Or is this a new Canadian law?

It might be because Case opened a Case owned distribution company in Canada. If they are Canadian, they can take advantage of Canadian tax laws, but they have to produce product that adheres to Canadian law.

Well, a Christmas miracle has been delivered. Cutlery Corner mailed me a new folding Hunter that I received today. And when I returned from Christmas at the farm, a package was waiting from Mr. Cooper. I am pleasantly surprised and satisfied.

I hope my pictures do these knives justice and I hope the Winchester, OH operation does well and prospers. Still finding out if Mr. Cooper would like me to mail him the replacement knife C.C. sent. I am more than happy.

Schatt & Morgan is the brand he bought the rights to at the Queen bankruptcy sale. So S&M is inevitable and making it go well is a big reason I hope he succeeds. It is a historic brand name dating back to the golden age of American cutlery. Keeping it a true American brand made in America and not prostituting it to China is why I’m cheering him on.

However the “weed” theme is a conundrum - regardless how one feels personally about “weed”, why risk alienating half (choose your percentage) of your potential customer base right out of the chute?

Looking at the pics of these single blade Weeds, it appears that the exposed upper tang edge (when the blade is closed) has been smoothed down in the factory. IIRC, similar patterns made by Queen/GEC had extremely sharp edges that could tear holes in your pocket (or tear off a finger nail if you reached in your pocket too fast).

Have these relatively smoother edges been consistent from your observations, Randy? Or anyone else that has looked them over? To each his own, but I hate obnoxiously sharp, protruding tang edges.

I agree with both of you. When I got those two in and looked them over, I just got a bad vibe from the shields. It seems that if people are wearing a marijuana weed image on their shirt, they are making a statement about something they enjoy doing, even if it is illegal. I felt like I was making a statement about using weed, and I have never used weed and don’t want to appear that I am in agreement with it’s use. Glad I sent those both back with all their scratches on them. I wouldn’t buy them with that shield on them again.

I have never smoked weed, nor do I care to regardless of the law, which seems to be changing. Our Commonwealth Attorney won't prosecute marijuana cases, but I know on the Federal firearms form it asks about controlled substances and I do not lie about that. I bought these to access the quality of the knives being produced and the maker's commitment to making a quality knife. Maybe they would be a conversation piece, but I use my knives privately regardless. I hope the Battle Axe knives being produced do not have the same quality control issues.

As most of you, with interest in these knives, probably know by now. Gil Cooper, who owns the old Queen Factory machinery, has also registered trademarks for: Schatt & Morgan, Battle Axe, Beaver Falls, Big Chief, Weed & Co. and Clyde Cutlery.
He has only 4 employees and they produce all knives by hand in Winchester OH. Hence, the small runs and slow releases.
Mr. Cooper is intent on bringing top quality Schatt & Morgan knives to market rivaling GEC and the old S&M quality using traditional patterns and handles.
His first release (Weed & Co) was intended to 'practice' and get feedback as well as experience. I think that is why the pot leaf was used, so no one would take it too seriously.
At the 85 dollar release price (what I paid) was reasonable to me just to own a piece of history in the making.
The Battle Axe knives are a step up from the Weed knives, which (from my experience) were of general recent Case quality, if not better.
I look forward to the Schatt and Morgan knives when Gil thinks he has the quality where he wants it.
