HART CUTLERY pocket knives RARE????

Hello my knife friends, please join in on this topic. I have pictured here a 3 3/4 cattle knife--PLEASE SHOW US YOUR HART CUTLERY KNIVES are they rare??--This knife to me is a lot different than most your cattle knives, all blades have a half-stop, and deep engraving out on master, very heavy and fat cattle--Thx Mark AKA Ratlesnake75

Wow! Someone else who has a Hart!
I have an old whittler that is a Hart. Looking at the tang stamp I thought it might have been made by Camillus, pre-WWII.
I spoke to Tom Williams about my Hart & asked if Camillus made it. He said he had never heard of it in his 30+ years at Camillus. He asked his Mom who worked for Camillus for more than 50 years & she had not heard of it either.

I posted it in the whittler thread I think. I don't recall anyone responding with info on the company.

I will have to post a pic when I get back home next week.

Hello Dale, I found your whittler in the forum got whittlers(very sweet), you know in our books, A guess just is not good enough, No way(I think) these knives were made by cammillus, We will get some opinions since mine has some etching and hopefully someone will recognize that kind of etch, someone with lots more experience than I. I think the Hart tang stamp looks like the same format as the 4-line pre-WWII Camillus stamp right down to the san serif font and same spacing between letters & lines, at least from the looks of it.
I need to take a 4-line Camillus & the Hart and measure the letters and line spacing to see if they are identical.
If those things are identical then I think it makes a good argument that Camillis made the Hart.

Tom Williams (CAMCO) was the historian for Camillus and is still a member of the local Camillus Historical Society. When he & he Mother (she started at Camillus Cutlery just after WWII) say that they have never heard of Hart Cutlery, I have to respect that. If Hart was made by Camillus, it must have been long before WWII. So long before WWII, that Mrs. Williams never heard any of the long time employees mention the name Hart Cutlery.

I am thinking out loud now:
Another thought just occured to me; perhaps it was a SFO (special factory order) to Schrade & perhaps Schrade was busy and subcontracted it to Camillus. Then it may have been viewed as a Schrade and not considered by the name on the tang.
I think this thoery is a bit thin, but I am throwing it out for someone else to chew on & see if they can come up with a likely scenerio.

I think IF Camillus made them; they were made a long time ago, and most likely not made in large numbers.

Just my thoughts on this matter. I will have to look closer at the tang stamps when I get home.

Hello, I would also like to point out that I had an American Shear & Knife Company Big Jack with this type of Bone handles. This type of Bone handles seem appear on the early knives from the new york, and conn. area--Never seen this type of bone on cammilus knives before--Just my observation though---Thx Mark

I just came across this subject and I have a couple of old Hart's that may assist in knowing who made them. The big lockback was clearly made by New York Cutlery. NY made that pattern for several different companies. My question: Was this heavy jack also a New York pattern? The main blade is a little over 1/8" thick. Half stops, slightly over 3 3/4" long.

I need to correct something I wrote about the large lockback - I wrote New York Cutlery, I should have written New York Knife Co.

New York Cutlery Co. was the forerunner to the Schatt & Morgan Cutlery CO., a jobber buying mostly foreign knives I believe.

I have one of these and I think I will start a new post to see who else might also have a New York Cutlery item.

Found this thread while looking for one on stag handled knives(still looking for that one).Bought this knife the other day at an antique shop.Not sure if it is the same company.Tang stamped,"Hart&Sons Fine Cutlery" on four lines.Tiniest Wharncliffe I have ever seen.

got this hart whittler in a pile off ebay

3 and 1/4 length

im thinking buffalo horn handles

has a spear main

broke pen blade

and a unique type of wharnie blade

maybe the style will shed some light on maker
if someone has seen it before

super sweet little whittler wish she was mint but couldnt love her anymore

I thought my knife originally had an oval shield.
Glad to see that Hart did indeed use an oval shield on a whittler.
I will have to put one on my Hart whittler.
