Foster Brothers

Post by Coppers »

All,

Could use some help on the history and potential value of a Foster Brothers pen knife. I’m not aware of any pocket knives they made nor can I find any on related knife sites. It can’t be any more than 2-1/2 inches long folded up with two blades. Etchings on it are thinly scribed angular to the length of the handle except for a scored box on one side.

Hello Coppers and welcome to AAPK. I'm not sure if this will help you, but below is what I see in Goins. Looks like they added pen and jack knives to their line of products around 1896 and continued until 1937.

Herb,

I find this fascinating. I grew up with this company in my back yard(or at least the building) and had no clue it produced anything other than butchers products. Is Phoenix cutlery I’m wonder, the same as central city cutlery. I’ve heard the name thrown around a few times. have been wondering if they were all connected. I’m a collecter of anything and everything Fulton NY related including hunter arms, but when presented with this little knife it threw me. Never seen a pocket knife from fosters and still can’t find any more out there in image let alone for sale. The quality didn’t seem to be overly fantastic. Maybe that’s why.

Hey Coppers. Glad I could help. Here's what my copy of Goins has on Phoenix.

Great info, Herb. Another victim of fire. ::td::

Is it t gold? The bail definitely looks like gold. At that time, fob knives were very prevalent.
