Now that the first serious snow is arriving, the critters need to chow down before their feed gets buried.

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
You're pics look familiar, Garry. I am getting a big influx of Cardinals and Sparrows here, along with a few of other species. I had my first Purple Finch this morning, but no picture. I also have had 3 or 4 interlopers (squirrels) but I have a truce with them. I won't chase them away, as long as they feed on the ground and stay off the feeders.

Nice photos Ike. I just have 2 male Cardinals and 1 Female. The bottom two photos are a WhiteCrowned Sparrow and what I think is a Song sparrow.

I seldom see White Crowned Sparrows and haven't been seeing Song Sparrows much in the last few years. At one time, both were quite common around here.

Cool photos, QS and Ike. I envy you fellows all that beautiful snow! I have plenty of birds, just been lazy about photographing them.

Was surprised to see a Cowbird turn up at the feeder. Also surprised to find a squirrel investigating the suet only because squirrels have been absent around here for many months.

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Good ones, BH!
I have been getting a daily visit from one lone House Finch. I am assuming he was on his way to Phil's house, and was somehow seperated from the flock during the bad weather. Now, he is lost in Illinois.
Here, also, is a Red Bellied from before the cold and snow arrived. I was hoping that this blast of cold weather would drive down some Evening Grosbeaks, or maybe even some Crossbills and Siskins. However, I just read an article that there is a good supply of food in their normal wintering range and they aren't expected to venture South beyond that range.

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
I have seen hardly any of my normal winter birds, just a chickadee once in awhile. Maybe because we have no snow, just cold & wind. But the common sparrows are busy at the feeder. I usually have juncos, nuthatches, various woodpeckers and occasionally a blue jay or cardinal.
So I am enjoying seeing others birds.

Very nice photos Ike. I'll try to get some pics of my avian moochers tomorrow. Since we got about eight inches of snow yesterday business has been booming at the bird buffet.

Many excellent photos from everyone. But Phil, we all want to know if the House Finches are again hanging with you. About two weeks ago I did get a single House Finch. His visit was brief. I have no doubt he was on his way to you.

This is the best picture I could get of this Eagle picking around on a deer carcass.

They don't. I've seen several of these live cams and a couple of them included squirrels the day I saw it.Steve Warden wrote: ↑Mon Jan 10, 2022 1:49 pmCool! I wonder how they keep the squirrels awayjerryd6818 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 10, 2022 1:39 pm live bird feeder cam. A lot of activity here.

Re: Ornithology (Bird) Thread
Mr P came to the suet this morning first visit that I've seen this winter, although I've seen a pair all fall and winter coming to visit the old box elders and wild cherry tree next door. We've had such a mild winter I think they have had plenty to eat, a few days of below freezing temperatures may have put a crimp in that.
