Re: Enough is enough
Not sure if I’ll make it thru the day ,still have a few hours . Haven’t made a resolution in some years but have slowed down buying .
Hope I wasn’t a bad influence .

Oh but you were a bad influence
I didn't even make it thru the day, but that's OK.
I don't make resolutions anyway.
Thanks Rip!

It is odd but buying a knife makes you want to buy another.

The longer you go without buying a knife the easier it gets to not buy a knife. It is like booze.

Thank you for the kind words, Ivoryman. I'm glad that I'm not inflicting that kind of self-torture on myself this year but it was an interesting challenge nonetheless.Ivoryman wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 8:45 pmRailsplitter wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 4:02 am Good luck with that, Ken. I know where you’re coming from. I made the same resolution a few years ago on January 1st.
I attended a knife show that January and I held my ground. Just looked around and enjoyed the commerodery. Then danged if I didn’t finally cave in and buy a knife in February. I should have just bought one at the knife show and been done with it.
I sincerely wish you better luck than I had.
That's about the most realistic answer I've seen. You did damn good to make it to February if you ask me. Shows great self control and more self mastery than I'll probably EVER have. Kudos to ya and happy new year. New year, new shot at a knife.![]()

I can relate. Might pick up something when visiting the 2 or 3 knife shows I plan on attending this year, if they actually happen. My biggest problem is I'm running out of storage space.

That’s a good looking storage cabinet there, Rick! I bought a cabinet from Harbor Freight - felt lined drawers and can be locked up, but yours is by far a much nicer one!

How do you like that Harbor Freight cabinet? Looked at them last time stopped by and they look like a decent cabinet for the price .

Thank you but I cannot take credit for it. It’s a picture that I took at a knife show a few years ago but I didn’t buy it.

That's a nice one, Rick, but I wouldn't even have a place to put it.

Re: Enough is enough
Rather than telling myself "I will not buy even one knife in 2022", i am saying "I will only buy a knife if it is exceptionally special". My standard for "exceptionally special" is high, like a 100 yr old never used stag Henckels folder, etc., things i am very unlikely to see.
There was a GEC made M&G "Boy's knife" just listed here on AAPK for a very reasonable price. I was strongly tempted but decided as much as i like it, i have enough top notch GEC knives.
Part of my 'holding back is age. I'm 75. How many knives do i want to leave for my children to have to deal with ? They have no interest in knives, lead busy lives and live far away. None of my remaining knives will become a family heirloom.
I think knowing this makes it easier to not buy a knife.

Re: Enough is enough
That is a good mind set to have, only purchase what is exceptionally special. That is now my approach. At my stage of life i don't need anymore knives and i cannot justify buying a knife just because i like it. I also have no one to leave them to. And it was good to see an esteemed and valued member of our community selling the M&G at a more than reasonable price, no hyped mark up. He is a gem. Happy New Year to you my friend.kootenay joe wrote: ↑Sun Jan 02, 2022 8:31 pm Rather than telling myself "I will not buy even one knife in 2022", i am saying "I will only buy a knife if it is exceptionally special". Well, I managed to make it all the way to Jan 2 without buying a knife. This afternoon, however, I picked up three. Although, to be fair, I had put in best offers on eBay for all three on Dec 31 (so, technically, it was prior to 2022), and my offers were finally accepted by the sellers today just a few hours before they would have expired...so, maybe those don't officially count in the current year's tally.

I really like the Harbor Freight cabinet. The felt lined drawers are nice. Only the top two drawers had dividers, so I made dividers for the other drawers. Can’t beat the price!

That certainly does look nice. How many knives will your cabinet hold in total with your added dividers?

Re: Enough is enough
The small drawers hold 5 each and the two large drawers hold 15 - so a total of 60. The top lid opens, and it’s a little deeper than the drawers, so I’m just using it for odds and ends storage now. If I put dividers there, that would be another 15 knives. That board at the bottom that’s barely sticking out pulls all the way out so you can lay things on it. Or pull it out, fold up, and it can be locked to hide the drawers.

Way to go Q, that's some dicipline. I made it to the 3rd. Broke down and rationalized and all that rot. Post it at the end of the week if it shows on time. Ha ha ha, what a raquet.

Ken sure do give you credit ,it’s hard with temptation around here . So many knives come by that it’s hard sometimes to say no .
Do really hope you can get whatever you strive for.
So Far have sold 2 and bought 2 ,subject to change though .
Hope your New Year is treating you okay up there .
Stay warm

I said no more until I can properly store and manage them. The el-cheapo knife rolls definitely didn't work out, and it's gonna take a few months ti be able to afford ordering Sack Ups and other decent quality solutions (like Plano fishing organizer boxes) to store them all.
