Any Train Enthusiasts Out There?

I spent about 5 hours working on the railroad today.

Sweeeeeeet John! What scale is that? My N-Scale is a bit too small. I think that I need something bigger.

I watch train spotting (and get pics) on YouTube.
Longest I've seen was just under 20,000 feet.

Holy Cow!!! That's like 3 1/2 miles long!

These are Lionel O-27 gauge, Tom. Not sure about the American Flyer though.

Thanks, Ike. It was a fun project and now that I'm back in Alexandria I miss tinkering around with it. I don't have enough space here for anything like that, plus my knives. My wife would come unglued!

Gentlemen, I recommend to you that should you ever be near Chicago you ought to visit the Museum of Science And Industry. There you will find an elaborate 3500 sq. ft HD train display, much improved from when I visited as a youth. If you google the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry train display, you will find numerous photos of the layout. I think you will enjoy the sights.

Lots of railroad action on today's coffee walk.

Just missed a good photo op of Metro and caught the tail end of the VRE, which snuck up while a CSX freight manifest was rolling by. Found a rightly marked "hole in the fence" for catching some NS Vulcan Yards action too.

Here is something a little different for this thread......I just got this HSB, main blade etched "Ayer & Lord Tie Co. Chicago". The first 2 pics, of the knife, are mine. Ayer & Lord was evidently, a major player in crosstie production around the turn of the century and beyond. I found some pics online, the first of their Chicago storage yard, and the next two from their facility in Carbondale, il.

Cool pictures and knife, Ike. It's mind blowing to think about all the board feet of lumber resting in today's rail beds.

A few years ago a guy was thinning out some timber on our farm and he cut crossties for a local plant. So a very miniscule amount of that current wood used for ties somewhere came from our land.

Ike I just saw a grain train go by that had a whole bunch of green BN cars that hadnt been repainted. I live in an apartment on the side of a hill which is a block and a half from the BNSF Depot and yard. So I got a pretty good view of action down there.

Great photos and history. People now days don't realize the back breaking physical work the previous generations went through. Can you imagine the actual labour that went into filling that storage yard. Happy New Year my friend, and thanks again for starting this thread.
