I thought it was a duck (had to google "Murganser")...and I was right (sort of...Murganser is a "type" of duck...different bill, etc.).Clearly, I'm no waterfowl ornithologist, 'cause I'd never heard that name before.

Nice shot, too...projects a very serene, calm and contemplative mood.

I never saw one but from pictures always thought they looked something like a Loon.

Thanks Q and QuickS, don't think they are that rare, see them around, but not like Seagulls and Cormorants. Cool birds. Not that afraid of people.

Getting better variety at the bird feeder than last year.

I'll have to double-check the Chickadees. The book say I should be seeing Carolina Chickadees not the Black-Capped Chickadees I think I am seeing.

Still no visits from House Finches, those little red birds that brighten up a winter and which were so abundant when I first came to KY. But now they are probably all hanging out at Philco's house like last year.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. He must like you, they ususally cruise whenever I see them sitting in a tree. Dont' hang around for pics. Good one.

My reaction is the same as Iman's. Around here a sitting hawk immediately takes off no matter how carefully I move.

It must be cold somewhere up north, the Robins have arrived! Robins are all over a Black Gum Tupelo tree out by our smokehouse this morning. They are getting the last of the Black Gum berries the gray squirrels have been after.
The 1st Robin of the season always gets attention.

I think these are Cliff Swallows babies, from one of the bird boxes last summer. They seem to kick the Bluebirds out when they arrive.

Good one! There seem to be more Hawks than usual, around here this winter. I have also been seeing Eagles on a regular basis.

Ike, Interesting you should mention that. I also have been seeing more hawks. I wonder what is stirring them up. No eagles in my neck of the woods. What surprises me is how very rare it is to hear an owl. This should be a perfect area for certain owls, at least for hunting purposes. Perhaps our woods are too thin.

I have read, that indications are that migration patterns for the Red Tailed are changing. Apparently, more are staying put in the central portion of their range and not migrating South. However, the Northern birds are still following past practice and joining the full time residents in this "overlap" portion of their range. I think we would be in that portion.

I suppose then that the birds are becoming aware that winters are becoming milder in our latitudes. I know that even quite a few years ago, certain populations of Canada Geese stopped migrating. Water and food remained abundant during the winters so why travel?

Most of my Eagle sightings are not good photo ops, as they are silhouetted against the sky, high in a tree or utility pole. I saw 3 in a field yesterday and one gave me enough time for a quick pic.

There are a good number of eagles here on the Coast now. Here are a couple that I spotted a couple of fishing trips ago.
