Golden Spike Customized For Large Hands

Post by orvet »

I started this knife with a blank that came from the Schrade factory sale. This blank was rough, unfinished, unsharpened and without any guard or other hardware.
I used brass bar stock to make an oversize guard because I knew I wanted an oversized handle on the knife. A stock 153UH as an overall
length of 9-1/4" with a 5" blade. I did not change the blade shape or size with this knife, though I did add an inch to the overall length making this one 10-1/4" overall.
Beginning from the guard the handle is composed of a ring of stabilized leather, a section of water buffalo horn approximately 1 3/8 inches in length, two red spacer rings, two black spacer rings and two more red spacer rings. This is followed by approximately seven leather rings and about a 2 inch length of stabilized elk antler eye guard. the end of the antler is crowned with an oval of stainless steel with my large logo etched in the oval.
Near the guard the handle is flat on the sides which helps with indexing and it also I helps your fingers get a purchase on the handle should it become slick or wet. I have larger than average hands and this handle it is very comfortable for me to use and also allows me to change my grip on the knife should I need to do that.

I wanted to make a sheath that is very similar to the original sheath, so I examined the 153 UH sheath that goes with a 153 UH that I have in my display. Of course the sheath I looked at was a later model with the pouch for the sharpening stone. The loop of the belt had to be considerably taller to accommodate the longer handle. I made the pattern myself just by looking at and measuring the original sheath. It is made primarily with 6 oz leather with saddle stitching. The knife has been in a state of about 70% completion for a number of years, I may even have posted pictures of it before, but creation of a sheath has been beyond my skills until recently as I begin to make more sheaths.

I hope you enjoy the pictures, there are more pictures in my store where the knife listed.

Awesome job!

I have medium hands, and I find my 153UH seems to have a handle that is too small of a diameter for the size of the blade, especially when compared tp my other knives with five-inch blades like the Buck 105 and USN MKI deck knife. The one let-down of this pattern is the handle. Otherwise, the blade shape is perfect, and it is really well balanced. Been meaning to pick up an Schrade Walden H-15, which is similar to the Mark I.
