Case XX 1965 - 1969 opinions needed ref crack on scale
I am not too good at figuring out how much %wise a defect on a knife scale would affect its value. Before I show you everything please 1st base your answers on just the info. I am showing here in the next four (4) photos only:

I'll show you the whole tang after I get some replies on seeing only these four shots and the fact that it is a 4 3/8" long closed and 7 3/4" open size.
The snap is incredibly strong. Each side shows signs of being sharpened but do have the original patina present.

Re: Case XX 1965 - 1969 opinions needed ref crack on scale
The tang has a USA with an obvious non-lightning type S. Since the USA below the Case XX does not have any dots either above or below it, it can't be an '81 or later since those would have the lightning-shaped S, right?
This is where I get somewhat confused. Shouldn't the 1965 - 1969 tang stamp period appear exactly the same as an 1980 one since the Case XX and USA are positioned the same with respect to one another for both year span (s)? And the dots are neither stamped above or below the USA for both a 1965 -1969 and a 1980, correct?
I am assuming a 1965 - 1969 for this one but am not 100% positive. Please opine and help me out on this tang date stamp issue.
Remember, at this point I only need the % decrease from retail that the scale crack and overall condition of the knife produce: more to follow after I get at least a couple of opinions without the other side of the tang shown. It doesn't need to be precise: just a ball park figure.
Thanks again

Re: Case XX 1965 - 1969 opinions needed ref crack on scale
Based on what you have said and the knife itself I would say this is a USA model knife. The crack appears to be a patch of bone replaced where the original bone was lost or discarded and subsequently repaired. I would assess this to be more of a degrade than a crack in the original bone. Are there any other hairline cracks in the handles? I can't tell but might be a hairline on the back handle at the tail end.
Everyone views handle cracks, patches and repairs differently. Just as collectors view "cleaning" some collectors won't even entertain the thought of buying such knives. Personally I don't like the look of the repair to the handle and wouldn't have much interest in it. If it was just a crack in the origianal bone I would view it differently depending on how noticable it was. Other collectors would certainly have their own opinions.

If I understand correctly, a 1970 knife would have 10 dots, a 1971 would have 9 dots, etc. until 1979, which would have one dot. Then in 1980 they started over with 10 dots with the "lightning" S. Maybe I'm all wet, but that's the way I understand it. If this is so, then yours is definitely a 1965-1969.

If there are no dots under the USA then it is a 65-69. I'm one of those people who will only tolerate a crack in a bone or stag handle if the knife is for sale at a bargain basement price. The last time I checked a knife like that in very good condition could be had for 125-150. The handle and blade condition on yours would reduce that price substantially in my opinion.

Since I just officially was accepted as an AAPK member last week this is only my second thread of which I am the author. I am still learning the do's and don'ts of AAPK.
I know that AAPK has an excellent interactive price guide that provides retail prices for Case XX knives, for example, and others. Since AAPK shows its members these prices, are members also permitted to inquire about pricing of their own knives, razors or hones if it relates to the subject matter of a thread in question?
In the example of this thread I still am unclear of what % this crack would degrade it from the retail price for this knife. I would like to sell this thing but 1st need to know a reasonable figure to post for potential buyers to make offers on...

Second, what do you mean by "retail"? Do you mean the price that the knife sold for new or do you mean the current market value for a mint condition example?

Now for the moment we've all been waiting for.
",,,wouldn't have much interest in it."
I am glad that I received a response like this since this is what I personally would have said with the repair/crack taken into consideration. Let's assume that this undesirable feature knocked the retail price down 30 %. Would the model stamped on this tang make this discount irrelevant because of the model's rarity? Taking everything into consideration could the sales price reasonably exceed the norm just because these things are not often available or not at all?
Please forgive me if it is frowned upon by AAPK, but I really need to know a value for this knife in its current condition before I put it up for grabs. I have not a clue and the true price could be significantly lower or even higher than what the AAPK price guide states.
Again, please guide me on if it's OK mentioning the price of items for sale while in a discussion thread.

My opinion, this knife is worth about $75.

"...what do you mean by "retail"? Do you mean the price that the knife sold for new or do you mean the current market value for a mint condition example?"
Firstly, I was going off of the AAPK interactive price guide for all of the mint state brands of knives out there. Please confirm that these AAPK prices are based upon a brand new knife whose rubber hasn’t hit the road yet. This is what I was referring to since past sales for this thing are nonexistent at least in the places I've checked out.
In my initial posts I kept referring to my need for the % discount that a used knife would get dinged for based upon the ‘brand new retail sales prices’ taken from the AAPK interactive tool. Is this the way that this AAPK tool is really supposed to be interpreted/used like etc.?

I can’t answer that as I believe that price guides can be, and often are, outdated as soon as they are published.mdpmedia1 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 05, 2021 2:04 am "...what do you mean by "retail"? I was going to say that the price of your knife would be reduced by approximately 80-85% of current market value considering its overall condition.
I also agree with David’s estimate a couple posts above but I am far from an expert.
Knives are selling for unbelievable prices these days so it’s honestly hard to say. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it sell for $75 nor would I be surprised to see it sell for $200.

The extra 1 in the number makes a big difference in the value of the knife but in my opinion the % of value lost is the same as if it was a 6111 1/2 stamp. Likewise I think a better repair would add value to the knife. The blade and stamp are desirable the repair is not.

The price list shows that this thing is $ 1,100.00 but I don't know if this figure is based upon a mint state example or not. What would be the price as it is now vs. one after someone repaired the crack to something more professional looking?

We are not trying to be difficult, but a knife is worth exactly what the buyer and seller agree upon.
One that sells for $1100 one day, may only sell for $300 the next. It is strange, and seems to relate as much to the quality of your pictures and the accuracy of your description, as it does to the rarity of your knife.
To most buyers, that repair drops the value significantly. The amount that it drops is simply up to the buyer. If a collector is searching desperately for that knife, they will pay more. If instead they just got a great deal on a nicer example, they are willing to pay less.
There is no hard-and-fast rule that governs the % that any defect will lower the value of a knife.

By this you must mean the moment when you tell us the truth about the knife. If you come here and would like an honest opinion let's be honest about what we are talking about. Hard to get an honest opinion when you aren't forthcoming with your question.

Most, if not all price lists are based on a knife in mint unused condition but still you must take in to account the date that the list was established and also that any list is just an opinion of one person. The most accurate way to put value on a knife is to take an average of recent sales. Your knife is quite rare with the unusual tang stamp but is in poor condition with the handle crack. If you want to raise the possible price you would probably be better off having the handle repaired but be mindful that Case bone from the 65-69 era is difficult to match so you would probably need a donor knife to effect a repair. You're just not going to realize anywhere near $1100 as is.mdpmedia1 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 05, 2021 2:40 am "...What attachments are allowed on this board?

I don't understand why you are trying to turn this into some kind of a game show, that is people have to answer questions before you will show all the pictures of the knife. Not the way it works here.

Thanks OLDE, your comments are indeed appreciated and will be noted...
This one comment I made, "Now for the moment we've all been waiting for:" was simply made to spice up my threads somewhat. Everyone has their own opinions and most folks enjoy a little levity every now and then; sorry I ruffled anyone's feathers.
IMHO specific format rules have not been broken in terms any AAPK guiding verbiage standards. I was very clear in my initial threads last week that I wanted to avoid being banned from AAPK in whatever I posted.
I have been oficially accepted as a verified member able to sell items just as of last week. This particular thread was my very first thread I created: still learning the ropes like an old salt sea dog trying to pull on the strings for the masts of a clipper ship. Looks like I pulled too hard on this one in your view. Sorry I tipped it over:
I will continue to do it in my way and my way only until I am reprimanded by the mods. When I personally encounter threads I dislike I simply delete em, well knowing that I'll miss out on members who are much more knowlegable than me. In my case I'd be missing out on 99% of the members at AAPK. I hope you do not choose that route: your loss.
I'm not trying to be a troll or anything; just a guy writing in his own unique style. Please don't go; you'll regret it. I like your opinions and any one else who disagrees with me. It makes me grow a tougher patina.

just a quick reminder that to sell on AAPK you need either a store or a premium membership to sell in the forums. You have made some casual remarks about selling both in this thread and another that some members have flagged as a violation. Thanks in advance for your respect of the in-place rules here at AAPK. I stay with my earlier estimate. In this condition it's about a $75 knife.

Re: Case XX 1965 - 1969 opinions needed ref crack on scale
I'm far from an expert on Case knives and their values. With that being said, any knife's value is heavily dependent on its condition. The OP knife has considerable wear and scratching, and some blade loss from use and shaprening. The handle has a broken chunk of bone that has been replaced with a not too impressive patch job. I would rate the overall condition of this knife as poor. Were I in the market for such a knife, and assuming the stated mint value is $1,100, I would not be willing to pony up more than a couple of hundred bucks for this one and I'd have to really want to fill that slot in my collection to do that. I'll go out on a limb and say that most collectors who would be in the market for knives in the $1,100 price range would not give this knife a second look. I don't mean to be harsh, but I'm giving you my honest opinion which is worth exactly what you have paid for it.
By the way,
to AAPK.
