Knife Oil

I have a few Amber Bone Case stockmans that have CV blades. When I oil them, with an old bottle of Schrade knife oil, I notice that it seeps into and discolors the pretty bone handles. I thought at first I was over-doing it with the oil, but even when applied lightly this still happens? Would Rem oil or Mineral oil do the same thing? Any suggestions

i use mineral oil now, and have a lot less staining. i use rem oil as well. the less color in the oil the better.

When I get a old knife I pretty much oil the joints and use Renaissance wax on everything else..blades, bolsters....Stag, Bone, Delrin whatever..............................I see many of you oil the handles..................am I don't anything wrong?.....................I do notice that the rennaissance way seems to revive dry handles what ever the material.

P & T, I use Ren Wax as well and love it. But I usually just apply it to the handles, and bolsters, not the blades. On the blades and joints I had been using regular knife oil, just a little, but still had seepage onto the bone handles causing it to discolor. I am going to try mineral oil instead.

Don......the funny thing is that what I most read about renaissance wax is that it is great for protecting blades. Honastly.....I am not 100 % on using it on the blades....it's not easy to wipe down to a film...and does not look as good as protecting them with oil.

Now I am double confussed about how to best protect blades and handles.........Oil or Wax...Wax or Oil?

i use the wax on the blades as well. recommended by museums, and they won't fingerprint so much. does not attract moisture. oil can spot blades if left on for too long as it can attract moisture. i use mineral oil on old bone and stag(ok for plastic too). i use mineral oil on knife joints that don't get fondled as often for storage. it actually takes such a small amount of ren wax, and i have no problem polishing the film away.

I have been using Renwax for a few years - a little goes a long way.

I recently purchased a 1 LB container of Briwax to protect the handles and knife blades. The nice thing is that it's about $14 or $15 for a LB. Wayne Goddard wrote about it in Blade some time ago. Seems like his recommendations are usually a good idea - I'll see how it works. It's cheaper and if it works, I'll switch.

I use Tuf-Glide dry film lube on the joints and Ren wax on the entire knife.

I do exactly like you do....Tuf-Glide on the joints & Ren Wax on the rest!

I have also noticed from time to time that if someone puts a price tag or hate to admit it someone removes a made in China tag......Tuf Glide...removes the sticker glue from the blade like nothing.

I've always used mineral oil and never had any problems with it. It washes out of my clothes easily too. For long term storage , I'd probably get some other type of oil tho. Maybe Militec?

Don, I've been using Ren Wax on all of my knives and have never had a problem. As Hukk said a little goes a long way and using less is better. I apply it to the blades and the entire knife, handles, liners, bolsters. It really brings out the color to stag and gives it a nice shine. I put a little bit of Remington oil to the joints as well. One thing about Ren Wax to remember is to make sure the blade is free of any oil or silicone before applying.

It's what is endorsed by and supposedly used at the National Knife Museum.

it's their house oil......what else would they recommend? they run the museum.

i have never had pure mineral oil spot a blade.

If someone sneaks into your house while you're gone and uses 3in1 oil on the blades and that leaves some spots, what's the best way to remove the spots?

Also, if you're going to apply renwax and need to make sure there is no residual oil, what should be used to clean the oil away?

Phil,

I've never known any oil, whatever it be, to stain a blade. UNLESS, there are uncleaned fingerprints, or some other oxidant on the surface, prior to appying the oil. What I do, is clean the blades ( the whole knife, actually ) with Simichrome, prior to applying any oil or wax anywhere. And, on that note - I've found a product at the local Walmart, called Maas polish, which is the exact same formula as Simichrome, for $3.50 per tube.

That's just my method, of course.

When somekind of oil stains the white bone handles, what should we use to get the stain out? I know the stain seems permanent but is there anyway to remove it from the discolored white bone handles?

on all my folding knives
Lubes and actually pushes dirt & grime out
When I heard pro bike racers, tour de france style,
used it on their chains for smooth action, I found they made

I only oil the joints if needed... and wipe up any excess with a rag... then wipe only the blade with the rag until there is no trace of the oil... shiny handles that look like they have been shellaced turn me off.
spots don't bother me one bit.

I've been using a little Formbys Lemon Oil on my stag and bone handle knives. I read about it on this site some time back. I bought a primitive bone GEC and applied it several times, and the bone soaked it right up. It did give the bone a little more color, which may be bad in some circumstances, but it greatly helped the appearance of mine. Since the color of the primitive bones vary so much, I didn't figure it would matter.
