, what issues cause you to question this knife?

hey phil, none from me. i would like gary's (bladerunner) opinion as he just did an article in knife world about "rare" 54s.

While i'm not nearly as versed in older 54's as B-R I'll give me .02 at a quick glace

honest blade wear, don't appear to have a re-cut choil, pins showing in the shield is comon for older knives that has been used as this one obviously has. Appears to be rogers bone although a bit pale, it's one I'd have to hold in my hand for that price.

Best I can tell from the pics I'm leaning toward giving this knife the nod. As MM said though for that kind money I would want to see it up close and in person. The devil is in the details.

Although I have pretty much quit collecting vintage knives, I kept all my 54s.
This is one of my all time favorite patterns ( I guess we Garys like 54s). It looks pretty good to me........must hold in hand! A thousand pictures isn't worth a knife in hand!

My concern; is a guy that has a knife like this should have a circle of people he knows that would be interested in this piece. Why eBay?

Is it just me, or does it appear to be a shield on top of a shield? I've never seen one like it. Could it be an original looking shield for that era?

The open C oops

and the looping S make it a period correct shield. It does have some sort of weird distortion though.........There is a wide oval and a narrow oval shield for the period.......................strange.

That is a closed C. Sheild, which is correct, I have seen the variation before, and the same one is on my tested Rogers and others I've seen. Can't make out if the sheild is scratched, worn or just banged up a little, but it would warrant a closer look.

Agreed...but I do know the seller and he's a good guy. Not really sure why he would put it on ebay. Being used and with cracks it won't sell for as much but, I do think he could get more for it at a show.

I was told you can catch some real good case xx fakes by looking real close with a glass at the tag stamp. you look for a dark stamp the stamp should be dark or alittle dark becouse Case use a hot stamp which will discolor the metal down in the lettering. Most of all fakes are cold stamped if you use a glass and look at a older real case you will see the dark stamp.
